JOB SUMMARY :

Under the general supervision of the assigned Division Commander or ranking designee, the Patrol Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol deputies, ensuring operational efficiency, coordinating law enforcement activities and ensuring compliance with policies of the Sheriff's Office ("Office"). Unlike a Division Commander, this position does not have management responsibility for the direction of the Patrol Division.

Pay Rate : $86,528.00 to $124,592.00 DOQ

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES :

In addition to the duties of a patrol deputy, the Patrol Sergeant directly supervises deputies on assigned shifts and special events, ensuring adherence to Office policies, procedures, and best practices.

Provides operational guidance for subordinate personnel, including the interpretation and application of Office policies and procedures.

Provides shift leadership, assigning tasks and managing personnel to ensure effective patrol coverage.

Reviews reports, investigations, and arrests completed by deputies for accuracy and compliance with applicable laws.

Provides performance feedback, completes subordinate performance evaluations for review and approval by command staff, documents training needs and issues supervisory situational reports.

Participates in disciplinary processes as assigned or self-initiated within their area of responsibility, including preliminary investigations, gathering evidence, obtaining statements, preparing documentation for review by superior officers, and recommending corrective actions in coordination with Lieutenants and other Command Staff.

Mentors, counsels, and trains deputies, reinforcing best practices and Office policies to enhance professional development.

Responds to and takes command of critical incidents, ensuring appropriate response protocols are followed.

Performs hands-on patrol duties, responding to calls for service, assisting deputies to initiate or complete investigations, and engaging in proactive policing strategies.

Works to promote deputy safety and operational effectiveness by supervising field activities, directing personnel in emergency situations, and enforcing safety policies.

Acts as a liaison between patrol deputies and command staff, facilitating communication, adherence to direction, and operational efficiency.

Coordinates with outside agencies when necessary to ensure interagency cooperation.

Participates in performance management but does not have independent hiring, firing, or final disciplinary decision-making authority.

Documents and reports personnel issues for review by Command Staff, providing input on employee performance but without sole discretion over personnel decisions.

Maintains accurate records of patrol operations, shift activities, and deputy performance to support command decision-making.

Provides input on Office policies and procedures but does not have independent authority to establish or modify them.

May serve as an acting Lieutenant if necessitated by operational needs and with command approval.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS :

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION

College degree or higher education in Police Science, Law enforcement, Criminal Justice, or related field is advantageous.

Relevant law enforcement experience of two years is required, or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Colorado P.O.S.T. certification upon hire or the ability to obtain Colorado P.O.S.T. certification within a period designated by the Sheriff's Office.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Provides timely, clear, and concise information for those who have a need / right to know.

Demonstrates knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and policies about the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.

Represents the County in a positive and professional manner.

Communicates effectively with individuals and groups from a wide variety of educational and cultural backgrounds.

Completes, processes, and maintains a variety of records, charts, and logs that are required in the performance of daily operations.

Makes effective presentations and discusses problems and possible solutions as required.

Interprets and applies relative policies, procedures, and plans, and implements and evaluates the effectiveness of personnel and operating procedures.

Supervises, coordinates, and plans daily activities of subordinates effectively.

Demonstrates extensive knowledge of the policies, procedures, methods, and activities of the Office as they pertain to the responsibilities of a Patrol Sergeant and lower ranking personnel.

Utilizes thorough knowledge of the methods of preliminary criminal investigation and the processes involved.

Applies knowledge of federal, State, and local laws that apply to law enforcement.

Demonstrates thorough knowledge of all areas of basic and essential law enforcement techniques, criminal behavior, legal rights, and other pertinent matters of law enforcement.

Utilizes skill in the proper use of firearms.

Displays knowledge of the principles of organization, management, planning, development, and implementation of responsibilities as they relate to the activities of the position.

Schedules daily activities and establishes short and long-term priorities to meet established goals.

Uses independent judgment and discretion in supervising subordinates, handling emergencies, formulating and recommending policies and procedures for review and approval by command staff, resolving problems, and advising the Lieutenant, Captain, Undersheriff and Sheriff through the chain-of-command regarding public safety and related matters.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :

Must have a valid Colorado driver's license.

Must pass a criminal background check.

Must have legal authorization to work - United States citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.

SUPERVISORY :

This is a first-line supervision role. Discretion in personal matters is required. Observation, evaluation, guidance, and direction of deputies occuron a continual basis. Strongwritten and verbalcommunication skills are required to address subordinates' performance appropriately. Must be able to develop appropriate relationships to continue growth for the team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT :

Must be physically able to operate various law enforcement machinery and equipment. Physical demand requirements are more than those for sedentary work. The work involves climbing, bending and stooping for short periods of time. Requires the ability to speak and / or signal people to convey or exchange information; includes giving instructions and assignments to co-workers; and includes the receiving of information and instructions from a supervisor.

Ability to talk to diverse groups outside the agency. Requires the ability to read and prepare an extensive variety of documents and reports in digital and paper formats including but not limited to arrest reports, continuation pages, runaway / missing person reports, vehicle impound reports, tickets (penalty assessment and summons), supplement reports, field interview data, witness statements, custody reports, DUI reports, property / evidence records, body worn camera recordings, and mental health holds using the prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style.

Must be able to speak with poise, voice control and confidence. Has the ability to apply rational assessments and problem-solving responses to a variety of law enforcement challenges.

Requires the ability to perform general mathematical functions. Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape and identify weapons. Requires the ability to run, coordinate hands and eyes in using firearms, arrest control and defensive tactics and related law enforcement machinery, equipment and tools; and to operate motor vehicles in normal and emergency circumstances.

Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, law enforcement equipment, controls, switches, etc. Must have adequate and effective levels of eye / hand / foot coordination as deemed appropriate in part by the office's designated occupational health clinic or designee.

Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Must be adaptable and able to perform effectively under moderate to high stress circumstances when confronted with an emergency. Requires the ability to talk and hear (talking-expressing or exchanging ideas using spoken words; hearing-perceiving nature of sounds by ear). May be exposed to heat, cold, odors, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, smoke, wetness, humidity, dust, disease, explosives, intense light, electrical currents, or violence.

POSSIBLE HEALTH RISKS SPECIFIC TO THIS POSITION

This position has been determined to be an EXTREME exposure risk to "biohazards" associated with blood-borne pathogens HIV (aids), HAV (Hepatitis A) virus, HBV (hepatitis B) virus, and air-borne transmissions of TB (tuberculosis). Members are advised that exposure to a "biohazard" may result in severe illness or death. Members are required by Department policy to use protective equipment and clothing. Vaccination may be needed to prevent or treat exposures to "biohazards". The County provides inoculation of HAV, HBV (Testing for TB), Chickenpox, Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis), Meningococcal, MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella),and Influenza. Some vaccinations are only required once in a lifetime, and you may be required to show documentation of the vaccine. Employees who decline to be vaccinated will need to sign a declination.

EMERGENCY DEPLOYMENT

Such assignments will align with operational needs and the employee's skills and may occur with limited notice. Deployment assignments require employee agreement, and employees will continue to receive their regular compensation in accordance with County policies and applicable labor laws during such assignments.
