The Peoria Police Department Communications Section is the lifeline between our community calling for help and our officers who respond to their calls. We answer 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls and dispatch resources using state-of-the-art technology.

ABOUT THE CAREER
Peoria Police Communication Specialists are cross trained as call takers and radio dispatchers. They answer emergency and non-emergency calls using a multi-line telephone and 9-1-1 systems. Responsibilities include receiving, processing, and dispatching calls for service and providing information to personnel. This position requires shift work, and all employees must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.

The CritiCall test is a computerized, pre-employment test measuring your typing speed and ability, along with underlying skills and abilities a person needs to be successful as a Police Communications Dispatcher. Below is a link with more information about the position and the CritiCall test.
Applicants who pass the skills test will be scheduled for an oral board interview. Oral boards may also be conducted via Teams, if applicants are out of state.
Applicants who pass the skills test will be invited to a mandatory Open House/Job Orientation. Dates are yet to be determined. This orientation will provide applicants firsthand information on a 911 Communications Center and the opportunity to meet other Communications Specialists. Applicants are welcome to bring spouses and/or adult family.
A thorough background investigation will be conducted on the most qualified applicant(s) for the position.
A conditional job offer is a preliminary offer of employment that depends on the applicant meeting certain requirements. A conditional job offer is not final until the applicant fulfills all the conditions and receives a final job offer.
Applicants must pass a drug screen, vision and hearing tests. Eyesight corrected to 20/20 and hearing in both ears, not less than 40db.
A battery of psychological tests shall be administered, and the tests will be evaluated by a licensed psychologist and used in conjunction with a personal interview to evaluate the applicant and determine their suitability for employment.
Each applicant will complete a minimum of a 2-hour sit-along.
The Chief of Police, based upon the results of the selection process and personal interviews, shall make the final hiring decision.
