Location: Dallas, TX (Hybrid 4 days)
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Engineer to join our data and platform engineering team in Dallas. This role will be responsible for designing, administering, optimizing, and supporting enterprise-grade database systems operating within modern Data Lake environments. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in database administration, strong SQL capabilities, and hands-on experience with high-availability and multi-region architecture.
This is a senior, hands-on role requiring strong technical depth, ownership, and the ability to collaborate closely with application, analytics, and infrastructure teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Database Administration & Architecture
Own end-to-end database administration activities including installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, monitoring, and performance tuning.
Design, maintain, and document database layouts and architectures, ensuring scalability, resilience, and performance.
Support databases running in Data Lake and analytics-driven ecosystems, ensuring seamless integration with upstream and downstream systems.
SQL Development & Optimization
Write, review, and optimize complex SQL queries to ensure high performance and reliability.
Develop and maintain stored procedures, views, and database functions following best practices.
Analyze query execution plans and proactively resolve performance bottlenecks.
High Availability & Disaster Recovery
Design, implement, and support Clustering and Always On Availability Groups (AAG) across multiple regions.
Ensure database platforms meet high availability (HA), disaster recovery (DR), and business continuity requirements.
Participate in DR drills, failover testing, and root cause analysis for database-related incidents.
Data Lake & Platform Support
Work closely with data engineering teams to support Data Lake environments, including ingestion, transformation, and consumption layers.
Ensure database systems are optimized for large-scale data workloads and analytics use cases.
Operational Excellence & Collaboration
Provide L3-level support for database-related issues, including troubleshooting production incidents.
Collaborate with application, DevOps, cloud, and security teams to ensure aligned solutions.
Maintain high-quality documentation for configurations, procedures, and architecture decisions.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Skills
Strong experience working with Data Lake environments.
Expert-level SQL proficiency, including query writing and optimization.
In-depth knowledge of general database administration concepts and practices.
Hands-on experience with stored procedures and advanced SQL constructs.
Strong understanding of database layout, schema design, and architecture.
Proven experience with Clustering and Always On Availability Groups (AAG) across multi-region deployments.
Design scalable and efficient SQL database structures that meet business requirements.
Monitor and optimize database performance
Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve database issues
Analyzing and tuning queries, indexes, and stored procedures to ensure optimal performance
Strong DevOps foundation, including fluency with CI/CD
Experience in cloud technologies and platforms, including Azure and AWS
Professional Experience
8+ years of experience in database engineering or database administration roles.
Experience supporting enterprise-scale, mission-critical database systems.
Prior experience working in environments with strict uptime, performance, and security requirements.
Soft Skills & Attributes
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
Clear communication skills, especially when explaining complex technical concepts.
High sense of ownership and accountability for production systems.
Nice to Have (Optional)
Experience with cloud-based database platforms and hybrid architectures.
Exposure to data governance, security, and compliance in large data environments.
Familiarity with automation, scripting, or DevOps practices for database operations.
