The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking a hydrogeologist to join our team to help with challenging projects related to quantitative hydrogeology. In this hybrid role, you will apply hydrogeology and groundwater modeling skills on projects related to water supply evaluations, remediation of contaminated groundwater, mine planning and development, and groundwater-surface water interactions.

The person in this position will apply hydrogeology and groundwater modeling skills on projects related to water supply evaluations, remediation of contaminated groundwater, mine planning and development, and groundwater-surface water interactions. Responsibilities may include working individually or as a part of a project team to assist with conceptual site model development, numerical modeling of groundwater flow and fate and transport, and aquifer test performance and analysis. Assignments may also include supervision of project teams. Fieldwork opportunities for this position may be available and may require some out-of-town travel.

The ideal candidate for this position is a clear and confident communicator who works effectively both independently and as part of a team. They are adaptable, organized, and proactive in managing multiple responsibilities across field and office settings. They bring strong attention to detail, sound professional judgment, and take ownership of technical tasks and project deliverables. They demonstrate reliability, initiative, and a commitment to continuous learning while also supporting the development of junior staff. Above all, they value teamwork, quality, and integrity in delivering impactful hydrogeologic and environmental solutions.

Your impact – key responsibilities

  • Technical knowledge: apply hydrogeology and geoscience expertise to design and execute subsurface investigations, groundwater and soil sampling programs, and hydrogeologic data collection. Independently analyze and interpret data to evaluate groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and site conditions. Contribute to development, calibration, and application of groundwater models to support site assessments and remedial designs.

  • Project support: lead day-to-day coordination of field activities and logistics, including drilling oversight, monitoring well installation, contractor management, and equipment preparation. Track project progress, budgets, and deliverables, and communicate key milestones to project managers and clients.

  • Problem solving: evaluate geologic and hydrogeologic conditions and identify practical solutions to environmental and water resource challenges. Apply regulatory knowledge, hydrogeologic methods, and scientific reasoning to support project decision-making and recommend approaches to complex problems.

  • Communication: prepare clear and accurate technical deliverables including field documentation, boring logs, figures, tables, modeling results, and report sections. Draft client correspondence and present findings to project managers and stakeholders in a concise and professional manner.

  • Interpersonal savvy: collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, regulators, and clients. Mentor junior staff by providing technical guidance and reviewing their work, while fostering strong, productive working relationships across projects.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: anticipated range of $85,000–$105,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Ann Arbor or Grand Rapids, Michigan; Duluth or Minneapolis, Minnesota; or Salt Lake City, Utah, offices.

  • Travel expectation: willingness to travel and periodically adjust personal schedule to meet project needs.

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided. Applicants may be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of specific clients. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Physical requirements for the role may include:

  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in varying outdoor conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, uneven terrain).

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Capable of standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching for extended periods.

  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by site conditions.

  • Ability to safely operate or work around environmental monitoring and sampling equipment.

About you – required core competencies

  • Education: master’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, or a related engineering degree.

  • Experience: 4 or more years of work experience directly related to groundwater flow and/or fate and transport modeling. Experience in aquifer test implementation and analysis.

  • Software: strong computer skills, including familiarity with MODFLOW and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • Experience: 5 or more years of relevant work experience.

  • Software: proficiency in GIS and programming experience using Python or FORTRAN.

  • Training: 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard (HAZWOPER) certification.

  • License: professional Geologist or Professional Engineer license in at least one jurisdiction or the ability to achieve a license within two years.

  • Familiarity with Groundwater Vistas.

  • Experience in aquifer test implementation and analysis.

  • Experience or coursework in the use of groundwater fate and transport codes.

  • Experience or coursework in parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis using PEST.

  • Familiarity with environmental regulations.
