Title : Arizona Conservation Corps-Phoenix Program Coordinator

Starting Salary Range : The starting salary for this position will be in the $22.93 to $23.62 range, depending on experience, education, and skills relevant to the position.

Please note that the indicated starting salary range describes the range for an incumbent in this position.

Most new staff generally start at the beginning of the range percentile to ensure internal salary equity.

Location : Phoenix, AZ

Status : Full time / Non-Exempt

Program Summary :

Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC) operates conservation service programs across Arizona, empowering individuals to positively impact their lives, communities, and the environment.

As a program of Conservation Legacy, AZCC continues the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps from the 1930s, focusing on connecting youth, young adults, and recent military veterans with conservation service projects on public lands.

The Phoenix Program office began with the launch of its first Urban Forestry Maintenance crews in the Fall of 2024.

Since then, the office has expanded to support a broader range of urban crews and IP team projects, including the Urban Forestry Program, as well as additional Urban Day Crew programming, and several specialized IP team initiatives such as Seeds of Success (SOS), Assessment Inventory Monitoring (AIM), botany, and invasive species management.

Position Summary :

The Phoenix Program Coordinator will play a critical role in implementing and supporting the expansion of the Phoenix office.

Reporting to the Senior Program Director, the Phoenix Program Coordinator will be responsible for aiding in the successful recruitment, training, and supervision of Crew Leaders, as well as mentorship of Crew Members.

This position will assist with office and fleet vehicle logistics and management.

This role involves overseeing project implementation, ensuring high standards of quality work, risk management, and program integrity.

The position involves a combination of office and fieldwork operating primarily within a standard Monday through Friday schedule, with occasional work on weekends for communicating with members or participating in outreach events.

This position may also include intermittent overnight camping to facilitate necessary training for program field work.

Outcomes & Functions of Position :

Supervision of Leaders, Member Development, and Support :

  • Successfully aid in the recruitment, training, and supervision of a team of seasonal program participants, including Crew Leaders and Assistant Crew Leaders, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.
  • Interview and select crew members as needed.
  • Provide continuous mentorship and field support to participants, fostering a positive and productive work environment that encourages personal and professional growth.
  • Work closely with local partners to align work outcomes with the needs of the community.

Project Coordination and Implementation :

  • Coordinate Urban Crew and IP team activities and projects to ensure alignment with the goals and objectives set by AZCC and its partners.
  • Develop clear project expectations and specifications in collaboration with stakeholders, ensuring crew leaders are well-prepared to execute project plans.
  • Maintain a strong presence in the field to monitor progress, provide support, and ensure that projects meet quality and safety standards.
  • Collect and manage data from crews efficiently and maintain multiple organized and up-to-date information systems that support project evaluation and reporting.
  • Develop project expectations and specifications with project partners, and communicate work plans to Crew Leaders and IP Teams, ensuring that they are prepared and knowledgeable of projects prior to implementation.
  • Actively engage in quality control and risk management through all phases of project planning, implementation, and evaluation.

    Program Logistics

  • Manage and organize a clean, safe, and efficient operations center (the office and shop).
  • Supervise and manage de-rigs, rig-ups, and re-supply for all crews and programs.
  • Purchase and repair hand tools, chainsaws, forestry equipment, necessary crew technology devices, and additional program supplies as needed for new programs.
  • Manage the repair and maintenance of the Phoenix based fleet of vehicles, trailers and conduct driver training for program drivers.
  • Purchase supplies and equipment to maintain the office / shop.
  • Maintain and create organizational systems for local logistics management, and maintain regular inventory of all equipment, tools, and uniforms
  • Coordinate logistics with other AZCC operations staff to ensure efficient resource utilization across the state.
  • Field Support and Risk Management :

  • Provide occasional logistical support to AZCC crews in various locations across Arizona outside of the Phoenix office.
  • Respond to crew emergency situations, including last-minute travel, field evacuations, and overnight stays.
  • Participate in a weekly on-call system for crews in the field.
  • Participate in staff trainings as a trainer and / or trainee and maintain necessary certifications relevant to the position.
  • Assist with the development and monitoring of risk management policies.
  • General Administration :

  • Work within the established program budget and report purchases to the Senior Program Director.
  • Manage credit cards, petty cash, and other expenses related to program operations.
  • Approve Crew Leader timesheets as well as oversee the completion of Crew Member timesheets.
  • Complete field site visit reports and any other necessary documentation.
  • Program Integrity and Risk Management :

  • Uphold high standards of quality control and risk management throughout all phases of project planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Provide active support in the field, which includes but is not limited to, response to crew emergencies, vehicle issues, and other unforeseen challenges that may arise during project execution.
  • Produce comprehensive reports demonstrating the program's outcomes and its impact on the communities served.
  • Training and Community Engagement :

  • Assist the Senior Program Director and other AZCC Staff in delivering in-house training on leadership, arboriculture safety including pruning and tree care, planting, watershed restoration, and other relevant trainings to the program.
  • Actively participate in program promotional activities, including community outreach and engagement, to raise awareness and support for the Urban Forestry program.
  • Serve as an on-call responder for AZCC Urban Crews support during regular work hours and providing timely assistance as needed.
  • Organizational Advocacy

  • Successfully engages, leads and supports a positive work environment for all within the organization and the communities we serve.
  • Leads and / or participates in organizational-wide teams, projects and initiatives that support the work of the Strategic Plans goals.
  • Reports any potential complaints within the organization as identified in the Personnel Policy Manual.
  • Assists or leads other responsibilities, as assigned.

    Qualifications :

  • Preferred : Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Forestry, or a related field, OR prior experience working for a Conservation Corps or AmeriCorps program, with preference given to applicants with experience within Conservation Legacy programs.
  • Minimum of one year of applied field experience in conservation, land management, urban forestry, or landscaping.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor young adults working in urban settings performing physically demanding tasks.
  • Technical competence in botany, urban forestry practices, arboriculture, landscaping, and the use of related equipment.
  • Proficiency with office equipment, Microsoft Office, and database management; ability to manage data in an organized, consistent, and timely manner.
  • Desire to learn or previous experience with Arc GIS, ESRI platforms, and other data collection software is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of staff, partners, and community members.
