Job Summary : Substitute teachers perform the instructional and classroom management processes for teachers who are absent for a day or longer periods of time. Their duties include taking attendance, explaining homework, and maintaining classroom cleanliness.

Required Professional Qualities

It is expected that the Substitute Teacher will possess :

  • A valid and current Substitute Teacher permit
  • Some college-48 credit hours
  • Bachelor's degree in education preferred
  • Strong English verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead and instruct students of all ages
  • General knowledge of several subjects
  • Ability to adapt plans to specific classrooms
  • Flexibility and critical thinking skills
  • Patience

Essential Job Functions - Accountabilities

It is expected that the Substitute Teachers will :

  • Follow lesson plans provided by the regular Teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students
  • Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment
  • Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student
  • Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground and in the cafeteria
  • Take attendance and document daily notes.
  • Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan
  • Compile a report for the teacher for when they return

    • Physical Requirements :

  • Prolonged periods standing.
  • Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 20 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to traverse school facilities and lead students to safety in an emergency.
