About the Role:
The Indirect Tax Auditor will lead and manage the full lifecycle of indirect tax audits (sales, use, and telecommunications) across multiple jurisdictions-from audit planning and risk scoping through data extraction, IDR management, sampling validation, issue resolution, and post-audit remediation. This role will serve as the primary liaison with auditors and external advisors, develop audit defense strategies, negotiate positions, and drive documentation standards to ensure defensible workpapers and audit-ready files. The consultant will also support ongoing compliance (preparation, review, and filing of multi-state returns), month-end close (journal entries and reconciliations), and maintenance of tax calendars, with a strong emphasis on strengthening data integrity, internal controls, and cross-functional processes that reduce audit exposure and enable timely, accurate filings.
What You'll Do:
Lead and own indirect tax audits (sales, use, telecom): plan audit scope, coordinate kickoff, manage IDRs, oversee data extraction and mapping, validate sampling methodologies, and drive resolution of findings.
Serve as the primary point of contact for auditors; prepare and present positions, documentation, and reconciliations; negotiate settlements and manage controversy through resolution, including appeals when appropriate.
Build and maintain audit-ready documentation: narratives, process maps, control evidence, workpapers, and position memos that support filing positions and materiality thresholds.
Perform root-cause analysis on audit issues; implement remediation and process improvements to reduce recurring exposure, enhance data accuracy, and strengthen internal controls.
Partner with Finance, Billing, IT/Data, and Operations to ensure data completeness, system alignment (e.g., taxability, rates, sourcing), and timely responses to audit requests. · Support indirect tax compliance by preparing, reviewing, and filing multi-state sales, use, and telecommunications tax returns; monitor notices and reconcile to GL and sub-ledgers.
Support month-end close with indirect tax journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, variance analysis, and tie-outs to returns and audit schedules.
Monitor audit cycles, statute dates, and filing deadlines to mitigate risk and ensure timely actions.
Track and report audit metrics, assessments, and cash impacts; prepare management updates and recommend reserves or disclosures as needed.
Stay current on SALT and telecom tax developments; assess impacts on audit risk, filing positions, and process controls. · Maintain audit reserve schedules, including determining appropriate reserve amounts based on audit findings and risk assessments, calculating and accruing interest, and preparing documentation/support to substantiate and reconcile audit reserves.
Do You Have?
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field.
CPA Preferred
3-7+ years of professional experience in tax, accounting, or related discipline.
Proficiency with Excel (pivot tables, lookups, conditional logic) and comfort working with large datasets.
Experience preparing journal entries and performing account reconciliations in a general ledger environment.
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet tight deadlines across multiple jurisdictions.
Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Even Better:
Telecommunications tax experience (e.g., state/local telecom taxes, 911 fees, USF contributions/surcharges, utility/telecom-specific fees).
Experience with a tax engine or compliance software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, Sovos) and filing portals (e.g., Streamlined Sales Tax, state e-file).
Prior experience leading audits to closure, drafting position memos, and negotiating assessments.
Working knowledge of multi-state rules on sourcing, taxability, exemptions, and telecom-specific fees/surcharges.
Hands-on experience responding to tax notices and participating in state/local tax audits, including sampling and controversy processes.
