The Clinical Nurse Specialist, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, collaborates with the healthcare team and serves as a clinical expert in age-specific (neonate, infant, toddler, adolescent, young adult,) assessment and implementation of care and education for pediatric hematology and/or oncology patients, their families or legal guardian(s), and staff; provides patient care, staff and patient education, quality improvement, outcomes measurement and management; contributes to approved research projects; participates in recommendation and evaluation of new products; collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to develop standards of care for the pediatric hematology and/or oncology patient, implement evidenced-based best practices at the bedside, and to develop and support staff competencies; collaborates with the interdisciplinary healthcare team for discharge planning to ensure continuum of care needs are considered; utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize excellence in customer service, safe patient care, and professionalism; contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse patient population and workforce. Maintains in-depth clinical knowledge in area of specialty and demonstrates clinical expertise in bedside practice. Serves as a clinical resource and coach for staff and patients and influences the workforce to achieve a high level of performance reflecting the vision and values of the organization. Performs other duties as needed.
Master’s Degree in nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist required. Minimum two years of experience in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology field required.
Able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
California Registered Nurse (RN) License and California Clinical Nurse Specialist certification required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required; CPON preferred, APHON Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider preferred.
