The registered respiratory therapist (RRT)functions independently or in collaboration with physicians or other health care providers. As clinicians, they are accountable for the coordination of all respiratory care services throughout the practice for the patient’s life cycles, including direct patient care, patient family education and transitions of care through teamwork and communication.. In addition, they’ll be expected to work autonomously to quickly and accurately assess a patient's condition and communicate effectively to the care team concerning changes in the patient's condition, results of diagnostic studies, symptomatology, and response to treatment.
The RRT will provide leadership through active participation in roles such as mentorship, student educator, committee involvement, and professional quality improvement projects. The RRT will operate within department/institutional procedures and guidelines in conjunction with the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC)guidelines to function independently using critical thinking to master the following skills: cardiopulmonary assessment, mechanical ventilation, noninvasive ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, Artline insertion, airway management, RT Bedside procedures, assist providers with bedside procedures, management of specialty gases, rt driven protocols, and external education support.
