Job Summary

Unit Summary :

Michigan Housing is an actively engaged unit within Student Life Auxiliary Services within the Division of Student Life. M Housing serves approximately 11,500 students; 9,100 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate and professional students and their families. Although first-year students are not required to live on campus; historically 96-98% of all new first-year students choose to live on. Currently, the M Housing portfolio consists of 19 residential facilities that include traditional residence halls, apartments, and other living options located in communities on north and central campuses in Ann Arbor. In partnership with Michigan Dining, there are 9 dining halls and 9 retail operations embedded within the residence halls that serve approximately 4 million meals per year. Beginning Fall 2024, M Housing partnered with other units and departments within Student Life to support the residential experience for approximately 25 U-M students on the Marygrove campus, located in Detroit. In Fall 2026, five new residence halls housing 2,300 undergraduate students and a new 822-seat dining facility will open to continue M Housing's strong tradition of providing affordable housing options and services for U-M students. In addition to supporting the academic mission of the University, M Housing creates and sustains diverse learning-centered residential communities that ultimately enhance the residential experience and serve as a guide for their work in support of M Housing values.

Position Summary :

The Michigan Housing Community Connections and Engagement Department is vital in fostering vibrant and inclusive residential communities where students feel a strong sense of belonging. It achieves this through dynamic engagement and programming in residence halls, addressing residents' accommodation needs, facilitating connections to campus resources, and supporting students in navigating campus climate concerns. By offering events, educational workshops, staff training sessions, and the You Belong Here campaign, the department strives to create a welcoming community where everyone can thrive.

The M Housing Accommodations Coordinator enhances the residential experience by managing the housing accommodations process for Michigan Housing. This role involves assisting current and prospective students and their families with housing options and accommodation needs. It requires effective collaboration within the Student Life division and with campus partners like Services for Students with Disabilities, other departments in M Housing, and Student Life Facilities Operations. Key responsibilities include overseeing administrative tasks, organizing meetings, and ensuring clear communication.

Responsibilities

Management of Residential Experience - 50%

Leads the Residential Accommodations Program by overseeing the end-to-end process of ensuring an inclusive, supportive, and accessible living environment for all students while they live in M Housing. By partnering closely with campus units such as Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) within the Student Accessibility and Accommodations Services (SAAS), M Housing Operations, University Health & Counseling, and the University ADA Coordinator, they coordinate M housing accommodations for students with disabilities, chronic health conditions, and religious observance needs. From navigating housing assignments to implementing necessary room modifications this person manages the day to day functions of the accommodation program to ensure every student feels empowered, welcomed, and fully supported throughout their entire time in Michigan Housing. Specifically duties include :

Partner with Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) a department within Student Accessibility and Accommodations Services (SAAS) to facilitate housing accommodations for students with disabilities and / or medical / chronic health conditions.

Serve as the primary point of contact for students, parents, and support networks?personally guiding them through all facets of the M Housing accommodation process, including conducting needs assessments, coordinating and verifying room modifications, arranging for timely installation of assistive devices, and facilitating approvals and plans for emotional support animals.

Collaborate with other University units (e.g., University Health & Counseling, SSD, University ADA Coordinator) to meet student health and disability housing needs.

Oversee the use of StarRez (the M Housing Management System) and internal M Housing databases to strategically manage, monitor, and track all housing assignments for students with accessibility, disability, or health-related accommodation needs, ensuring data security, accuracy, and seamless service delivery.

In conjunction with the Associate Director for Community Connections and Engagement and Student Life Facilities Operations, assess, propose, and lead the implementation of facility modifications to ensure compliance with ADA, state, and federal regulations, while driving a culture of universal design in all M Housing buildings.

Lead the accommodations process for religious observance requests. This includes identifying assignment options for needs related to religious observance practices, serving as the primary contact during the assignment process to staff, students, families, and student's support structures.

Manage and triage the M Housing Accommodations inbox, providing prompt, thorough, and empathetic responses to accommodation inquiries and requests, and serving as a resource for residents and their families.

Lead the process for review of contract termination fee waiver requests related to health, disability, or religious observance needs. This may include meeting with the student and / or reviewing relevant documentation to determine the final outcome of the request.

Assess current student trends, identify current and future needs for accommodations, develop processes for students to utilize M Housing systems to request accommodations, and create protocols for assignment.

Complete an annual report for compliance with federal and state law.

Keep track of existing on-campus housing inventory for accommodation needs.

Residential Climate Support and Education - 25%

Assist the team in daily triaging and tracking of residential climate concerns reports in the residential communities.

Support the conflict management process and responses to identity and climate concerns reported by ResStaff and M Housing permanent staff in the residential communities utilizing multi-disciplinary and restorative practices expertise.

Provide support to students, ResStaff, and Residential permanent staff in navigating residential climate concerns.

Provide educational outreach, training and support across the University community.

Create training programs for M Housing staff on best practices to serve students with accommodation needs.

Develop student centered processes for navigating the application and assignment process in collaboration with M Housing colleagues.

Implement initiatives related to the M Housing You Belong Here campaign.

Departmental Administration - 25%

Participate in an on-call rotation to address campus climate incidents within residence halls, providing support remotely via phone or email.

Provide an annual report on data elements including the number of requests for accommodation, number of accommodations granted, number of service and support animals, demographics and location requests granted, and other data points as directed.

Generate reports and presentations to inform decision-making in support of student trends, support efforts, service evaluation and provide advocacy for current and future needs.

Provide onsite coverage for the office to support residents, serving on the department's Core Coverage Team.

Serve on University and Student Life committees. Lend knowledge and expertise to colleagues, in working groups and in public forums.

Attend the Council for Disability Concerns meetings as representative for M Housing.

Perform other duties as assigned by M Housing Unit and Department Leadership

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree

Experience in student affairs and or related field

Experience in building inclusive communities, program leadership, or a customer service driven environment.

Experience in mediation, conflict management, or restorative practices in resolving conflict.

Additional Information

Working Conditions :

The job requires working evening and weekend hours and traveling to multiple M Housing locations on campus. The position is an onsite position and shares office coverage responsibilities.

Possibility for one (1) day remote work a week following successful completion of probationary period.

Physical Requirements :

Individuals may be required to be stationary for long periods of time.

Extensive computer and phone use required.

Be able to move and transport packages and boxes up to 25 lbs

Direct Reports :

May have direct supervision of hourly student staff to support the residential experience.

Provides functional supervision of all department student staff on addressing residential climate concerns and supporting residents.

Additional Information

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
