Mechanical Department Manager - Propulsion And Deck Systems
Austal USA is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Department Manager - Propulsion and Deck Systems to join our team! This leadership role will be responsible for overseeing and guiding a team of Engineers 1 through 4 in the functional development and detailed design support of critical marine systems. You will manage key systems such as propulsion, steering, engines, generators, and various deck equipment including cargo handling, mooring systems, cranes, ramps, and water launch / recovery systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, exceptional leadership skills, and a passion for driving innovation in the marine industry.

Reports To : Chief Department Engineer & Program Engineer
Supervises : Engineer III, Engineer II, Engineer I, Designers and Draftspersons
Authorities / Responsibilities :
- Responsible for overseeing Department Goals for a specific project as directed by the Program Engineer and Chief Department Engineer
- Responsible for preparing, overseeing and assigning design calculations and drawing development to support Program Goals
- Responsible for checking calculations
- Responsible for progressing all department work
Qualifications / Knowledge / Experience :
General :Minimum 8 plus years of design and / or construction experienceExcellent written and oral communication skillsUnderstanding of scheduling and an ability to adhere to strict deadlinesExperienced in interacting with Production, multiple design teams from several companies, customer representatives and equipment manufacturersComputer literate and familiar with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office productsThorough knowledge of ship and propulsion systemsStrong working knowledge of Maritime Regulatory Authorities (i.e. ABS, DNV, GL, NAVSEA, MIL, USCG, IMO, etc.)US CitizenshipMarine / Mechanical Engineer :Successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering degree or minimum 15 years of equivalent marine design experienceThorough knowledge of ship and propulsion system design and operationThorough knowledge of engine alignment and shaft design and alignmentThorough knowledge of HVAC designWorking knowledge of FEA methods is advantageous but not a requirement.Knowledge of composite shafting is advantageous but not a requirement.Tools :
