Accountant I (Open)
The Accountant I position is responsible for performing a variety of entry to mid-level accounting and financial support functions for the Law Enforcement Division. This position supports financial operations, ensures compliance with state accounting procedures, and assists with reconciliation, auditing, and financial tracking of division programs, including boating and law enforcement-related accounts.
Essential Job Duties:
Financial Processing and Accounting Support
- Maintain and monitor invoice logs, identify discrepancies, and resolve invoice-related issues
- Process and track Expense Reimbursement Documents (ERDs) and resolve associated problems.
- Maintain and reconcile purchase card (P-Card) logs and ensure compliance with state purchasing policies.
- Manage and track contract and off-contract purchasing logs, including reporting requirements.
Auditing and Financial Compliance
- Conduct or assist with Voyager audits and other internal financial audits.
- Prepare and maintain quarterly financial reports, including off-contract purchase reporting.
- Assist in ensuring compliance with state accounting standards, internal controls, and audit requirements.
Program-Specific Financial Administration
- Support boat registration financial processes, including: Issuing refunds (including W-9 processing and account verification)
- Assisting with annual boat sticker distribution
- Supporting county treasurer and public inquiries (help desk support)
- Assist with government boat registration renewals and associated seasonal workload demands.
- Reconcile boater registration and Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) funds to ensure accurate tracking and reporting.
Financial Tracking and Record Management
- Maintain and update investigative cash fund tracking spreadsheets for law enforcement operations.
- Ensure proper documentation and retention of financial records in accordance with agency and state requirements.
- Maintain updated tax-exempt forms and ensure proper usage across transactions.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Post high school coursework or vocational education in accounting, finance, business administration or related field OR experience performing accounting functions including interpreting and analyzing financial data.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with government accounting practices
- Experience with audit processes and compliance reporting
- Familiarity with law enforcement or natural resources agency operations
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles, financial recordkeeping, and reconciliation processes
- Ability to analyze financial data and identify discrepancies
- Familiarity with state accounting systems (e.g., Oracle/JD Edwards preferred)
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, including seasonal workload fluctuations
- Effective communication skills for coordination with internal staff, county offices, and the public
- Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and financial regulations
