Job Summary
Reporting to the Chief Labor Relations Officer, the Assistant General Counsel will assist in administering and implementing collective bargaining agreements, conducting collective bargaining, advising principals and department leaders on matters related to collective bargaining agreements and labor relations, including discipline matters, drafting collective bargaining and grievance settlement agreements, and generally representing CPS in engagement with its labor partners.
Responsibilities
- Engaging with district principals and union representatives on labor issues, including advising CPS managers on best practices, contractual obligations, and creative problem solving.
- Meeting regularly with labor representatives to address contractual issues in order to avoid unnecessary grievances.
- Representing CPS in contract negotiations, other collective bargaining sessions, and impact bargaining discussions with labor unions representing CPS’ 30,000 plus unionized employees
- Drafting responses to requests for information, grievance settlement agreements, and policy materials.
- Other duties as assigned
Education Required
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school, required.Must be licensed to practice law and in good standing in IllinoisExperience Required
A minimum of one (1) year of legal practice, inclusive of internships, externships and clerkships, required.Experience in labor and employment law, preferred.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Establish / Maintain Chicago Residency—Employees must live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary / part‑time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
