Overview
Job Purpose :
The Industrial Engineer - OEM Quoting Lead is responsible for managing and executing the quoting and estimating process for OEM customer programs within a metal fabrication environment. This role combines strong industrial engineering principles, deep process knowledge, and commercial acumen to deliver accurate, competitive, and timely quotations. The engineer evaluates manufacturability, defines production routings, and partners with Sales, Operations, Engineering, and customers to align cost models with real manufacturing capabilities. This position is critical in supporting business growth, improving profitability, and ensuring operational readiness for all OEM opportunities.
Essential Job Functions / Responsibilities :
Quoting & Estimating Leadership
Serve as the primary owner of the OEM quoting process, providing accurate and detailed cost estimates for complex fabricated components and
assemblies.
Analyze drawings, 3D models, specifications, and customer requirements to determine the most efficient manufacturing approach.
Develop and maintain accurate labor standards, routings, cycle times, and cost models for metal fabrication processes (laser cutting, machining, forming,
welding, finishing, assembly).
Prepare detailed quote packages including bill of materials, material utilization assumptions, labor hours, overhead allocation, and margin
recommendations.
Manage multiple RFQs simultaneously and ensure on-time, high-accuracy submissions.
Manufacturability & Process Engineering
Perform manufacturability assessments (DFM / DFA) and recommend design or tolerance adjustments to improve cost and producibility.
Evaluate production readiness and capacity, working with Operations to align quotes with actual shop capabilities.
Propose tooling, fixturing, automation, or equipment enhancements based on upcoming OEM opportunities.
Conduct time studies and validate estimated cycle times through shop-floor engagement.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Sales to understand customer expectations, program strategy, and competitive positioning.
Interface directly with OEM customers to clarify technical requirements, discuss design considerations, and support negotiation discussions.
Partner with Purchasing to evaluate supplier quotes, outsourcing strategies, and material cost drivers.
Communicate clearly with Production and Engineering teams to ensure smooth handoff of awarded projects.
Cost & Data Management
Maintain and update cost databases, pricing standards, and estimating templates to improve quote consistency and accuracy.
Analyze historical data to identify trends, validate assumptions, and refine pricing models.
Track quote performance against actual production costs and lead continuous improvement efforts to close gaps.
Support cost-reduction initiatives for existing OEM programs through process optimization and design recommendations.
