Director, AI research - Hybrid from San Francisco, CA

One of our companies is currently looking for a Director, AI Research in San Francisco, CA.

In this strategic leadership role, you will oversee cutting-edge AI research initiatives, focusing on advanced language models and reasoning agents. You will be responsible for shaping the research direction, driving innovation, and leading a talented team of researchers. By collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will ensure the integration of research into real-world products and applications, while fostering a culture of excellence and continuous growth within the research organization.

Accountabilities :

  • Lead and contribute to groundbreaking AI research, with a focus on advancing large language models and reasoning agents.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive research strategy aligned with the company's long-term vision and industry goals.
  • Guide and mentor a team of applied researchers and research engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
  • Stay ahead of AI advancements to ensure the team remains competitive and uses the latest technologies and methodologies.
  • Collaborate with product teams to bridge research into tangible product features and measurable outcomes.
  • Publish high-impact research and represent the company at leading AI conferences and industry events.

Requirements :

  • Proven experience in AI research leadership, with 6-10 years of experience in pioneering AI research and driving innovation.
  • Strong expertise in large language model development, including fine-tuning agentic models and understanding context window efficiency.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with AI frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • A strong publication record in top-tier AI conferences and journals.
  • Experience leading and mentoring teams of 5-10 researchers, fostering collaboration and achieving high-impact results.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams, especially in a remote environment.
  • A Ph.D. or MS in Computer Science, AI, or a related field is preferred but not required for exceptional candidates with equivalent experience.
