Academic Advisor, Upward Bound Math Science

SUMMARY

To identify, recruit and provide services to a selected number of Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) students within a five-county area. At UBMS we strive to provide educational counseling including setting goals, financial aid education, career exploration, preparation to increase college acceptance and encouraging completion of both a secondary and postsecondary education. UBMS is required to continually track and document postsecondary students to ensure their successful completion of a postsecondary degree within six years of high school graduation and assurance of meeting or exceeding program objectives. The services provided include counseling in social, personal and academic areas.

These services are directed to promote the successful post-secondary placement for former Upward Bound Math Science students who have completed high school.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Monitor and evaluate the academic performance of all students, as reported by the area instructors, as they participate in the scheduled classes during the academic year and recommend tutoring services as needed. Assure all students are signed up for Oklahoma Promise and are on a college preparatory track at their high schools.
• Drive to target schools to identify, recruit, and provide services to Upward Bound Math Science students including : tutoring, academic, personal, and career counseling, and mentoring for both the academic year and summer component.
• Collection of necessary data (transcripts twice per year, Pre-ACT & ACT scores, etc.), documenting and maintaining accurate and complete records concerning students' performance, program activities services, and student contracts.
• Responsible for coordinating the tracking of all former participants who completed high school until they complete a post-secondary education program within a specified time period as stated in the objective, as well as encouragement and advisement for successful completion of a postsecondary education within 6 years.
• Collaborate with planning and conducting the Saturday Workshops mostly held on the East Central University campus during the academic year. Planning includes developing a budget, recruiting speakers in STEM, and coordinating workshop topics in accordance to grant specification.
• Coordinate educational / cultural field trips and accompany students on field trips during the academic year and summer component.
• Encourage parental involvement by assisting with planning of social / cultural activities, college visits,informational workshops related to college admission and financial aid information during the academic year and summer component.
• Assist with the monitoring of all students' academic performance in their classes during the summer component, provide tutoring services as needed, study skills advisement, place students into internships, and coordinate community service projects.
• Assist in maintaining an on-going public relations effort with the students and target school officials through newspaper articles and periodic newsletter publications.
• Assist with any other duties as may be requested by the project director; including but not limited to the preparing of monthly reports to be submitted to the Director.
• Assist the Office Manager with yearly audit of files.
• Keep good working relationships with school personnel in order to keep recruitment and good relations within the schools.
• Conduct one-on-one and group counseling sessions during both summer and academic year. Use computer, copy machine, and telephone.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Bachelor’s Degree and / or pursuant of Master's Degree in Counseling, Education, Human Resources, or related field. Emphasis will be placed on candidates with experience in TRIO programs or are former TRIO participant. Experience as an academic counselor, math or science instructor in the secondary school system is also preferred. The ideal candidate should possess excellent communication skills.

Having the ability to relate to students, parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators in a positive manner along with excellent written and communication skills. The candidate must exhibit a high degree of professionalism and possess knowledge of academic resources, along with educational and financial aid strategies. The candidate should possess excellent customer service skills and have the ability to work in a team environment and relate well to our students and their families.

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s Degree and / or pursuant of Master's Degree in Counseling, Education, Human Resources, or related field.

Excellent written, verbal and computer skills. Academic capabilities. Knowledge of current high school age student challenges and ways to help motivate students in their personal goals. Skills include :

SALARY RANGE : $34,000 - $35,000
