Clinical Genetics (Full-time, Day Shift) -

The Supervisor–Lab Cytogenetics provides technical leadership and serves as a resource for junior laboratory scientists Maintains LLUMC’s technical Quality System essentials ensuring compliance with current regulatory and accreditation standards. Works in the Clinical Genetics Lab performing analyses on biological abnormalities and diseases. Assist in the organization of laboratory activities and develops protocols to improve existing genetic techniques and diagnostic procedures. Analyzes data for genetic tests and maintains accurate laboratory records and data. Performs other duties as needed.
Master’s Degree or equivalent in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology or a related field required. Current State of California Clinical Cytogeneticist Scientist required. Minimum three years of experience in Cytogenetics and meets the following experiential requirements listed below.
a. Three years of cytogenetics or related scientist/research experience;
b. Three years of [cytogenetics or related scientist/research experience] performing cytogenetic analysis on cancer specimens for diagnosis and prognosis;
c. Three years [cytogenetics or related scientist/research experience] working with and developing new FISH assays;
d. Three years of [cytogenetics or related scientist/research experience] designing and conducting cytogenetic research projects;
e. Three years of [cytogenetics or related scientist/research experience] evaluating test results for validity;
f. Three years of [cytogenetics or related scientist/research experience] preparing scientific manuscripts for publication; and
g. Three years [cytogenetics or related scientist/research experience] training junior scientists.
Expertise in all aspects of cytogenetics including culturing, harvesting, slide prep and staining, microscopy, karyotyping and FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization), analysis and interpretation of results. Knowledge of regulatory standards. Skill in exercising initiative, judgment, problem solving, and decision making. Skill in analysis, development or reports and interpretation of complex data. Strong work ethic, high energy level, and ability to work as part of a team. Able to read; write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint). Operate and troubleshoot basic office and patient care equipment required for the position. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; provide leadership; be assertive and consistent in enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; work well under pressure; problem solve; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; work independently with minimal supervision. Able to distinguish colors as necessary; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone, and identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace; see adequately to read computer screens, and written documents necessary to the position.
