Job Highlights for Officers

  • Starting Salary : $83,673.84 up to $101,706.24 (not including overtime or other pay incentives)
  • Additional Certification Pay : 10% for Intermediate and 15% for Advanced certifications

What You'll Do

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification. A s the Police Officer you will :

  • Carries out the mission of the agency as defined in the mission statement; models, promotes the core values of the organization.
  • As a first responder to incidents, they serve as a direct link between the department and the public.
  • Responding to and investigating incidents and crime scenes, taking action at incidents, proactively patrolling assigned areas, engaging in information lead policing activities and making independent decisions to deter criminal activity.
  • Enforcing laws and ordinances, making arrests, preserving crime scene evidence and performing preventative community policing. May be assigned to specialized units or teams in the department.
  • Serves arrest and search warrants.
  • Directs traffic and patrols areas during incidents or any other occasion of a special or emergency nature.
  • Investigates crashes, completes reports, makes arrests or issues citations; renders first aid.
  • Conducts investigations concerning various types of crime, interviews witnesses and suspects, takes photographs, fingerprints and gathers evidence.
  • Attends judicial proceedings, presents evidence and provides credible testimony.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and attends in-service training classes and schools.
  • Books in prisoners and transports prisoners when necessary.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies.
  • Completes reports; conducts follow-up investigations and re-contacts.
  • Renders assistance to the public.
  • Complies with the safety requirements of the position and actively promotes safe work practices.
  • In an emergency event or an officially declared State of Emergency, responds as directed to ensure the restoration of essential public services, facilities and infrastructure.

  • Judge when and what type of force is reasonable based on the circumstances.

  • Must be able to work various shifts and inclement weather as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of college coursework at time of application or have served in the military with an Honorable Discharge or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.
  • Must be a minimum age of 21 years.
  • Oregon Driver's License upon hire.
  • Academy Certification : be able to obtain certification by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training - DPSST Minimum Standards of Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer as noted by (Administrative Rule) within the first 12 months of employment
  • Required Qualifications

  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation including criminal history check and obtain an Oregon State Police Criminal Justice Information Systems clearance.
  • National Testing Network Testing

  • No need to test before your interview. If you are selected and receive an invitation to an Oral Board, the City of Bend Police Department will sponsor your NTN testing at the Bend Police Department.
  • Applicants who hold a four-year degree are exempt from this requirement.
  • If you have tested within the past 12 months, we will honor your scores.
  • Work Environment

    Work in a 24-hour environment with varied shifts including weekends and holidays. Duties are primarily performed on patrol in an assigned geographical area where the employee is exposed to varying and extreme weather conditions. When responding to emergencies, employee risks physical hazard from violent, aggressive, and hostile people, a variety of weapons, noise, chemicals, bodily secretions, sharp objects, traffic, drugs and drug paraphernalia and crime scenes. Physical exertion is required to climb stairs, go over walls, run, move heavy objects, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas and sit for a long period of time during surveillance. Physical effort is required to lift materials, equipment, and persons exceeding 75lbs, and subdue combative persons.

    Anticipated Hiring Process :

    Group Long-term Disability Insurance : Benefit-eligible employees working at least 20 hours per week are eligible for a a benefit of up to 66.67% of employee's covered earnings to a maximum of $9,000 per month.
