Position Summary
The Histotechnician is responsible for preparing high-quality histologic slides used by pathologists for diagnostic interpretation. This role requires strong attention to detail, proficiency with laboratory equipment, and strict adherence to quality, safety, and regulatory standards. The Histotechnician plays a key role in ensuring timely and accurate specimen processing within the pathology department.
Key Responsibilities
Specimen Preparation : Receive, accession, and label tissue samples; ensure proper documentation and chain of custody.Tissue Processing : Embed tissue specimens in paraffin, section tissue using a microtome, and mount sections onto slides with precision.Staining Procedures : Perform routine and special stains, including H&E and various histochemical and immunohistochemical protocols.Equipment Operation & Maintenance : Operate, clean, and maintain laboratory instruments such as tissue processors, microtomes, cryostats, and staining platforms.Quality Assurance : Follow quality control procedures; monitor reagents, troubleshoot staining or processing issues, and ensure compliance with laboratory standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, OSHA).Recordkeeping : Maintain accurate logs, batching records, and quality control documentation.Safety & Compliance : Adhere to biosafety protocols and chemical handling procedures; uphold HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements.Collaboration : Work closely with pathologists, lab technologists, and support staff to meet turnaround times and improve workflow efficiency.Qualifications
Required :
Associate degree in Histotechnology, Medical Laboratory Technology, or a related fieldCompletion of an accredited Histotechnology programHT (ASCP) certification or eligibilityKnowledge of histologic techniques, fixation, tissue processing, microtomy, and staining proceduresStrong manual dexterity and meticulous attention to detailPreferred :
Prior experience in a clinical or pathology laboratoryFamiliarity with automated staining systems and digital pathology toolsSkills & Competencies
Excellent hand–eye coordination and fine motor skillsStrong organizational and time-management abilitiesAbility to work independently and in a collaborative team settingGood problem-solving and troubleshooting skillsEffective verbal and written communicationWork Environment
