Job Overview
This position requires an experienced PA who will primarily work in the Cardiac Surgery Operating Rooms. The PA will serve as the first assistant in all aspects of elective and emergent cardiac surgery, supporting complex aortic surgeries, heart transplant procedures, redo cardiac surgeries, and other high‑acuity operative cases. The role demands advanced surgical proficiency, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to work independently within a fast‑paced, highly specialized operating room environment.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Support the physician staff in cardiac surgery procedures, including endoscopic vein harvest and radial artery harvest / recovery.
- Assist in a wide range of complex cardiac surgeries, performing procedural tasks and instrument handling.
- Contribute to patient assessment, ordering of diagnostic tests, and development of treatment plans under physician supervision.
- Maintain accurate patient records, logs, and documentation for administrative purposes.
- Participate in rounds with residents, assist with patient care and disposition, and handle medical emergencies during regular shifts.
- Mentor and orient new PA staff as needed, support training activities, and assist with performance evaluations.
- Collaborate with the surgical team—including attending surgeons, residents, nurses, and ancillary personnel—to provide cost‑effective patient care.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.Successful completion of a Physician Assistant program.Physician Assistant licensure within three months of application.Physician Assistant certification.Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.Preferred Qualifications
State and federal controlled substances registration.Physical Requirements
Lifting and turning patients of 30-35 lbs.Prolonged standing, walking, occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing / pulling, kneeling, and squatting.Ability to work within the semi‑restricted and restricted environment of the OR.Exposure to infectious disease, blood‑borne pathogens, and potential hazardous chemicals.Requirement for manual dexterity and visual acuity to assist during procedures and use computer systems.Ability to hear instructions from physicians.Skills & Abilities
Advanced understanding of cardiac surgery techniques and aseptic practice.Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with multidisciplinary teams.Analytical skills for patient assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and care planning.Capacity to lead, coach, and review work of lower‑level professionals.Expert knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and cardiac life‑support.Ability to manage critically ill adult and pediatric patients across the life span.Compensation & Benefits
