$7056.00 - $9498.00 Per Month ($84672.00 - $113976.00 Annually)

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary

Under general direction the Corporal performs a variety of general law enforcement duties. Work assignments typically require the incumbent to exercise independent judgment and action.

Incumbents typically perform general law enforcement work that includes some or all of the following : patrolling campus buildings and grounds on foot or vehicle; maintaining order; enforcing laws rules and regulations; apprehending and processing violators; initiating police action; preparing and presenting oral and written reports; providing assistance to campus personnel students and the public in public safety matters; and serving as the lead or senior member on a campus patrol operation.

The Corporal rank is distinguished from the Police Officer by the regular ongoing assignments of one or more of the following : assignment as a team leader assistant watch commander or patrol agent responsible for leading a shift and providing direction to officers in the field. The Corporal performs special assignments on a regular ongoing basis including but not limited to : Field Training Officer (FTO) investigator / detective crime prevention specialist and / or community relations specialist.

Position Information

Protection of Life Property and Facilities

  • Patrol campus and surrounding area(s) on foot bicycle or by vehicle.
  • Provide security for large gatherings assemblies or other activities such as registration athletic events or social events.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness crime prevention and safety programs.
  • Answer calls for service; protect persons property and facilities.

Supervisory / Investigative Support

  • Train new officers and civilian employees as assigned.
  • Supervise a shift as required (in the absence of a Sergeant).
  • Conduct investigations related to assigned cases or incidents which occur on or near campus during the assigned shift take necessary action within the limits of existing laws policies and procedures.
  • Administrative and Report Support

  • Provide general information and assistance to faculty staff and students and the general public.
  • Participate in crime prevention activities enforce laws traffic regulations apprehend and arrest criminal violators on or off campus.
  • Prepare reports covering observed irregularities violations of the law or campus regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned

    Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge and Abilities :

  • Valid California drivers license.
  • Thorough knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of effective investigative techniques and procedures.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgments.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and direction to field personnel during assigned shift.
  • Must satisfy citizenship requirements. Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who has applied for citizenship and obtains citizenship within three years of application date.
  • Education and Experience :

  • High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy and a Basic Course Certificate.
  • Two or more years of active law enforcement experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of public safety including law enforcement methods traffic control arrest and safety procedures in a campus environment existing criminal codes law etc.
  • General knowledge of crime prevention First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to quickly learn and apply campus rules and regulations; assess law enforcement or other hazardous situations; determine an appropriate course of action; prepare clear and concise procedural reports; and maintain cooperative and working relationships with the campus community general public and local and state police agencies.
  • Possession of a P.O.S.T. Intermediate and / or Advanced Certificate.
  • Possession of an undergraduate baccalaureate degree from an accredited academic institution.

  • Incumbent must hold a valid California Drivers License as well as continued completion and compliance of the CSU Defensive Drivers Training course throughout employment.
  • Must maintain current licenses certificates permits or other items required for this position; and immediately report to supervisor the loss or expiration of same.

    Incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without

    reasonable accommodation. Must be able to complete all the physical requirements of active duty as a Corporal.

    Work Environment :

  • Must be able to perform law enforcement duties and emergency related duties in various environments (indoor outdoor inclement weather and other adverse conditions etc.).
  • Requires ability to work various rotating shifts including nights weekends and holidays. May be required to work on short notice.
  • May be required to travel including during the evenings / nights and weekends.
  • Personal protective equipment required : police uniform (as described in the University Police General Orders Manual) and duty belt with weapon.
  • Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students faculty and
  • staff.
