Maimonides Health Nursing Pediatrics Position
Serves as a liaison between patient, family and internal staff to ensure timely and efficient provision of services during the patient's stay. Performs the clerical and receptionist functions on a nursing unit so that the unit runs smoothly and efficiently.
Responsibilities
A. Communication
- Acts as a receptionist on the unit, receiving all incoming phone calls, greeting and directing visitors and patients.
- Assures prompt and courteous communication between all departments by scheduling tests promptly, returning telephone calls quickly, and taking and forwarding messages accurately.
- Answers intercom promptly to ascertain patient's needs and notifies appropriate personnel to ensure immediate response/assistance.
- Answers routine questions from patients and visitors on hospital policy.
- Answers/screens telephone calls in a professional manner stating name and unit.
- Responsibility for "admission notification beeper" by immediately notifying the manager/charge nurse of admission.
- Hand-off documentation to covering PCT before all breaks.
B. Charts/Computer
- Prints "all required forms" from Standard Register. Splits/disassembles patient's chart as per policy.
- Temporarily locates/relocates patients on electronic medical record as appropriate.
- Monitors the printer output and restocks printer paper as needed.
- Prints the Occupied Unit List report from Teletracking (Patient Tracking) or any other unit specific electronic system and verifies that all patients are in correct beds. Calls Admitting Department with any discrepancies.
C. Admission/Transfers/Expirations
- Notifies the appropriate personnel e.g., physician, nurses on the unit, dietary staff in a timely manner of new admission/transfers/expirations.
- Enters into electronic medical record patient dispositions: Discharge, AMA, Elope and Expired.
- Maintains accurate identification of all patients on unit by making daily rounds and checking that all patients are wearing correct wrist identification bands and that door labels are accurate.
- Enters admission, transfers and expirations in log book and on appropriate interdepartmental communications forms.
D. Miscellaneous Responsibilities
- Makes discharge and transfer arrangements for patients (e.g., ambulance/ambulette, appointments, special diets).
- Prepares and maintains adequate supply of forms for patients' record.
- Prepares requisitions for supplies and stores items in a designated area.
- Orients new Information Specialists.
- Sorts and distributes mail on the unit.
- Communicates effectively with incoming Information Specialist (shift to shift report).
- Adheres to the established departmental policies and procedures, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Qualifications
Education:
- High school graduation or equivalent required
- Associate degree/College credits preferred
Experience:
- 1 year of relevant clerical experience preferred
Skills:
- Must pass Information Specialist test
- Successful completion of in-house training course is mandatory
- Basic Windows application
- Good vocabulary and command of the English language
- Ability to handle heavy and diverse workloads in a timely manner
- Good interpersonal skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Speaks, reads and writes English in the extent required for the position
Pay Range
USD $28.25 - USD $28.78 /Hr.
