Overview

The Communication Studies department teaches a variety of courses supporting transfer and professional-technical programs. In Communication Studies courses students develop transferable and lifelong skills such as problem-solving, communication (written, formal, and informal presentation), team building, strategic thinking, leadership, conflict management, cultural awareness, and many other socio-emotional skills. Faculty in Communication Studies collaborate with our professional-technical faculty to contextualize courses to meet program needs or to create new courses to support emerging professional-technical programs as needed.

  • Duties & Responsibilities

    Teaching

  • Foster an equitable, anti-racist, and culturally inclusive learning environment and demonstrate an awareness of the experiences and needs of the current student population.
  • Develop curriculum, prepare, modify and deliver teaching / learning activities designed to maximize student learning and foster inclusive excellence.
  • Teach courses in accordance with the course record, course syllabus, approved student learning objectives, and quarterly course schedules. Design and / or deliver course assignments, learning activities and assessments that enable students to meet the course's stated learning outcomes.
  • Develop a current course syllabus using the College's inclusive syllabus template and submit it to the Instruction Office prior to the start of the quarter.
  • At the course level, assess student work using appropriate methodologies that promote further learning; at the department or program level; at the program or department level, disaggregate, review and assess student learning outcomes with the goal of continuous improvement and reduction of opportunity gaps.
  • Complete summative evaluations of student work during the College's scheduled finals week; submit final grades by the designated deadline.
  • Create and maintain department and student records in accordance with college policies and procedures.
  • Refer students to college services, community agencies and other professionals as appropriate.
  • Conduct program / transfer advising as detailed below.
  • Establish, post, and maintain regularly scheduled office hours for consultation with students.
  • Program Advising

  • Full-time faculty will be responsible for advising a caseload of currently enrolled students.
  • Participate at least once annually in professional development to maintain and update advising skills.
  • Participate in quarterly Advising cross-training per quarter as requested by the Dean / Supervisor.
  • Provide Program Advising as assigned for students in all areas in which the faculty member has been cross-trained.
  • Proactively contact all assigned students each contractual quarter.
  • Participate in advisee student support networks.
  • Active use of institutionally sanctioned advising platform(s) as appropriate for scheduling, record-keeping, degree planning, and communicating with advisees with ongoing development, training and support provided by the college.
  • Faculty Program Advisors will support students in developing the following skills :
  • Transfer and career planning.

  • Building, modifying, and adhering to a degree plan.
  • Identifying and adhering to institutional deadlines.
  • Accessing essential resources on campus.
  • Accessing technological resources that will assist them in monitoring their program blocks, graduation and transfer requirements.
  • Identifying and overcoming barriers to academic success.
  • Continuation of Professional Standards

  • Stay current in relevant best practices, emerging topics, and research, especially those related to the mission, vision, and values of the college.
  • Maintain certification and / or licensure required by the College in the performance of the faculty member's assignment.
  • Participation in College Priorities

  • Contribute to EvCC's mission, vision and values and to the priorities and objectives articulated in .
  • Attend and participate in :
  • the first two days of annual opening week activities held in the Fall quarter

  • department and division meetings
  • training activities as mandated by state and federal law
  • professional development program mandated by
  • the annual commencement ceremony in June.
  • Serve on committees.
  • Reassigned Time

  • The leadership of the College has the right to assign faculty duties to faculty members.
  • Faculty may be assigned non-faculty duties including, but not limited to, administrative functions, leadership of college initiatives, or other specially assigned duties.
  • Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience :

  • Master's Degree in Speech Communication, Communication Studies, or a closely-related field from an accredited institution with specialization in one of the following fields : Intercultural / International Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Health Communication, Applied Business / Workplace Communication
  • Experience teaching Interpersonal or Intercultural Communication at the college-level
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Ability to use a Learning Management System (such as Canvas or Blackboard) and willingness to effectively integrate technology into instruction
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to engage and support a diverse student population, particularly community college students with varied academic preparation, life experiences, and educational goals
  • Ability to contextualize Communication Studies courses to meet needs of professional-technical programs
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, including the ability to work effectively with colleagues, staff, and students
  • Ability to teach classes in person at the Everett Community College main campus
  • Preferred

  • Community or technical college teaching experience
  • Experience with curriculum development and program assessment
  • Experience working or living in a cross-cultural context that informs inclusive pedagogy and enhances classroom discussions
