Position Description

The NWI Technician plays a key role in the installation, maintenance, and technical troubleshooting of Mesonet (weather) stations, rain gauges and radar stations across the region. This position requires strong technical skills, the ability to work independently in the field, and effective communication with landowners and project stakeholders. The technician ensures that environmental data streams remain accurate, timely, and reliable, directly supporting critical weather monitoring and research operations.

About the Department and / or College

The National Wind Institute (NWI) has evolved from its traditional singular focus on wind hazards to three main research pillars of Energy Systems, Atmospheric Measurement & Simulation, and Wind Engineering. Though all three of these pillars focus on distinct issues, they also maintain common ground via cross cutting themes. All research seeks to benefit communities at micro and macro scales.

Major / Essential Functions

• Troubleshoot weather sensors, completing repair when possible, coordinating external repair with supplier when necessary
• Maintain laboratory to support instrument repair and calibration
• Perform regular instrument calibration, complete battery testing, soil conductivity measurements, and other technical measurement tasks that benefit the West Texas Mesonet
• Help develop an inventory and bar code reader system to keep track of sensors, organize storage systems to support station maintenance and installation
• Assist with datalogger operating system and program updates and cell modem operating system upgrades
• Assist with ordering and receiving of weather station supplies
• Assist with field maintenance and installation efforts when needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proven capabilities to perform weather sensor evaluation, calibration and repair

Ability to drive a tech vehicle

Meticulous organization skills

Excellent written and verbal communication

Ability to operate independently and in a team setting

Preferred :

Background in weather related technologies (e.g. radar, lidar)

Knowledge of weather-related terminology

Experience with weather related data product generation

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with 1 to 3 years of experience in field-based technical work. Additional experience, instead of education, can be considered on a year-for-year basis.

This position requires eligibility to drive TTU vehicles, including a valid U.S. driver license and two years of driving experience.

This position is designated as involving access to critical infrastructure systems and / or research, as defined by Texas Executive Order GA-48. As such, candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background check prior to employment. Employees are required to comply with all applicable state and federal regulations related to the protection of critical infrastructure. Ongoing employment is dependent upon maintaining eligibility for access and successfully passing periodic security and compliance reviews.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience leading a calibration laboratory

Experience with data loggers, data logger programming, cellular communication systems, and other related technologies

Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan.
