Purpose
A licensed practical nurse (LPN) is a licensed, classified, school personnel assigned to the health office or to a particular student requiring respiratory support.

Performance Responsibilities
All work is performed according to the Nursing Practice Act. In the educational environment, due to the stability of the student's clinical state and predictability of medical outcomes, the degree of required direction and supervision provided to the licensed practical nurse (LPN) by the licensed registered nurse (RN) is taken into consideration. Routine work is carried out independently.
An LPN must maintain and keep current; their Medical Certification and CPR certification and is responsible for their own continuing education and professional development.
An LPN may be assigned to more than one school so travel between schools is necessary.
An LPN is expected to attend paid in-services and training sessions.
Reports to the RN (REGISTERED NURSE) and Regional Lead on student specific practices, Health Services Supervisor on matters concerning school nursing practice, protocol, process and nursing program, and the school principal on individual school matters.

Essential Duties
Tasks that may be performed by and delegated to an LPN include:

  • Performing safe and effective hands-on nursing care.
  • Monitor and document response to nursing interventions.
  • Administer medications and treatments to students per physician order and parent authorization.
  • Collecting information to support the RN (REGISTERED NURSE) in the development of new care plans (IHP/EAP).
  • Participating in the modification of individualized plans of care (IHP).
  • Interfacing with health care providers in the community regarding updating individualized plans of care and medications and treatments in the school setting.
  • Delegating to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP), Health Aides (HA) and Health Technicians (HT).
  • Care for and monitor students with health-related conditions or who may be ill/injured, administer basic first aid, and assist with emergencies.
  • Communicate with parents/guardian regarding concerns and treatment by telephone, or written communication.
  • Assist with student health screenings as instructed and assigned by the Health Services Department.
  • Encourage and promote disease prevention such as hand washing and good hygiene.
  • Monitor immunization status and provide resources for immunizations.
  • Screen for contagious diseases and provide referral and treatment information.
  • Work through Health Service Supervisor and with local health officials to track reportable communicable diseases.
  • Assist students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
  • Provide health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.
  • Act as resource and guest speaker for health education units as requested.
  • Provide in-service education opportunities for school staff on health-related issues.
  • Maintain the health office; ensure it is clean, organized and fully supplied. Ensure equipment is in good working order.
  • Perform data entry, maintain health records, and document all health services provided within professional, legal boundaries and school guidelines.
  • Complete and document Child Protection reports, employee injury reports and other health related reports, when appropriate and as directed by the Registered Nurse and Regional Lead.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff health information.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with the West Ada School District policies and procedures and the Idaho Nurse Practice Act.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Competency Requirements
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others: contribute to the development of a positive school climate;
  • Abide by the Code of Ethics for the School Nursing Profession as established by the Idaho State Board of Education, the Board Policies and Procedures of the District and the terms and provisions of the Standard Teachers’ Contract;
  • Compliance with the requirements of Idaho Code with regard to teacher and school nurse conduct, including but not limited to the manner in which suspected instances of child abuse or suspected student suicidal tendencies are addressed;
  • Adhere to confidentiality with regard to student information;
  • Attend faculty meeting and conferences as directed by the Building Principal and participation in in-services activities and other professional growth opportunities;
  • Establish and maintain good working habits including punctuality;
  • Implement the beliefs, mission statement, objectives and parameters of the District’s strategic plan.

Qualifications
Valid Idaho Practical nurse license (LPN).
BLS CPR Certification.
Minimum 2 years nursing experience, pediatric or community health nursing preferred

Essential Physical Abilities
  • Sufficient visual acuity to perform physical assessments and to comprehend, prepare, and review both electronic and printed documents;
  • The ability to make fast, simple repeated movements with hands and fingers and the ability to react quickly with hand, fingers and feet;
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal conversation and to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform repetitive hand/wrist/arm motions and to operate a computer and office equipment;
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and balance to climb stairs, run short distances to play grounds or within building, stoop, kneel and crouch on ground multiple times without assistance, lift or move objects that weigh up to 35 lbs.;
  • Must have a valid Idaho Driver’s license and a vehicle to drive and/or must provide own transportation for job related activities.

Yearly by building administrator.
