Position Summary
The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in the NICU provides specialized respiratory care for premature and critically ill newborns. The RCP performs respiratory assessments, administers respiratory therapies, manages ventilators, and supports neonates requiring advanced respiratory interventions during night shifts. This role requires strong clinical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a high-acuity environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide respiratory assessments and develop care plans for neonates under medical direction.
Administer respiratory therapies including oxygen therapy, CPAP, HFNC, surfactant administration, and aerosol treatments.
Manage and monitor neonatal ventilators, HFOV, and other advanced respiratory support systems.
Perform intubation assistance and support neonatal resuscitation as part of the NICU team.
Document all assessments, treatments, and clinical changes accurately in the EMR.
Monitor patient response to therapy and communicate findings to the NICU medical team.
Participate in high-risk deliveries as needed.
Ensure proper infection control, equipment cleaning, and maintenance of respiratory devices.
Respond to emergencies and perform CPR and NRP-guided interventions.
Collaborate closely with nurses, neonatologists, and other care team members during night shifts.
Follow all hospital policies, NICU protocols, and regulatory guidelines.
Qualifications & Requirements
Current and valid Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) License.
RRT preferred; CRT may be accepted depending on facility requirements.
NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification required.
BLS and ACLS certifications as required by facility.
Minimum 1 year of NICU respiratory therapy experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of neonatal ventilation equipment and techniques.
Ability to work independently during night shifts and manage multiple acuity levels.
Excellent communication and critical-thinking skills.
