Additional Information About the Role The Nurse Practitoner will work on a 38 bed surgical unit with the goal of providing excellent care to all of our patients. Working on this unit you have the ability to work side by side with some of the most innovative surgeons in the region. Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Surgical Services Department provides pre-op and post-op inpatient care to those patients undergoing specialty surgical procedures in the areas of abdominal solid organ transplant, vascular surgery, hepatobiliary, trauma, ear-nose and throat, orthopedic, colo-rectal, urology and other general surgical procedures. Inpatient care in this department focuses on pre-op needs, post-op care and treatment after phase I recovery through discharge from an inpatient nursing division. The department's surgical observation unit and ICU provide intensive care and treatment to those post-op or post-traumatic patients whose condition requires treatment at this level. Preferred Qualifications Role Purpose The nurse practitioner functions within their scope of practice as a healthcare provider, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to provide comprehensive care to patients and families across practice settings. They demonstrate a high degree of clinical expertise in working with patients with acute and chronic illnesses commonly encountered within the inpatient setting. The nurse practitioner demonstrates an advanced level of clinical knowledge, communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, professionalism, and systems-based practice. They work with administration staff, nurses, physicians, medical/surgical trainees, and other staff to assure safe, effective, quality patient care.Minimum Board Certification(s):BJH: Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP), Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP), or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP- with appropriate experience)Preferred Board Certification(s): BJH: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) Responsibilities Provides compassionate, appropriate, and effective patient and family-centered care for health recovery, illness prevention, treatment of critically ill, or end-of-life care. Responsible for assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, health promotion, and care coordination for patients and families with acute and chronic health needs in an academic inpatient setting. Communicates and collaborates effectively with patients, families, physicians, medical/surgical trainees, and other health professionals. Demonstrates the highest level of accountability for professional practice by participating in professional development, quality initiative/performance activities, and implementing standards of care within area of specialization.
