Manages the operation, system integration, and administrative coordination of Clinical Engineering across the health system. Leads change through designing, strategically planning and overseeing implementation of new technology, systems and policies. Participates with leadership to develop clinical engineering short and long term strategies for integrating technology systems across devices, medical centers and functional areas, and remaining current in a rapidly changing environment.

The System Director, Health Technology Management (HTM) serves as UCSF Health's senior leader responsible for the strategy, operations, safety, and lifecycle management of all clinical technology assets across the enterprise. This role ensures UCSF Health maintains a safe, reliable, and cost-effective medical device environment that supports clinical excellence, cybersecurity resilience, regulatory compliance, and capital efficiency.

Reporting to the Vice President of Support Services, the System Director leads an integrated, systemwide HTM organization that supports adult and pediatric hospitals, ambulatory sites, and specialty facilities. The position partners closely with leaders in IT, Clinical Operations, Facilities, Supply Chain, and Nursing to advance technology standardization, improve uptime and service response, and optimize total cost of ownership across the device lifecycle.

UCSF Health has significantly expanded its clinical technology footprint and cyber-risk profile, requiring a systemwide HTM leader to unify strategy, governance, and operations across all hospitals and ambulatory sites. The role now includes enterprise-level medical device cybersecurity oversight, integration with Project One/Oracle, expanded lifecycle planning responsibilities, and oversight of regional HTM operations at Benioff Children's Oakland, Stanyan, and Hyde Street.

The position also incorporates a broader leadership structure, including management of the Medical Device Cybersecurity Officer, Capital Acquisition Director, and systemwide operations managers.

The estimated salary for this position is $290,000 - $375,000 (Annual Rate). The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.

Department Description

The Health Technology Management (HTM) Department provides enterprise-wide leadership for medical device lifecycle management, clinical technology strategy, biomedical engineering operations, and medical device cybersecurity across UCSF Health. The department supports all adult and pediatric hospitals, ambulatory clinics, procedural areas, and specialty facilities by ensuring safe, reliable, and cost-effective equipment that enables high-quality clinical care.

HTM partners closely with Clinical Operations, IT, Supply Chain, Facilities, and regulatory teams to proactively manage risk, maintain accreditation readiness, optimize technology investments, and advance systemwide standardization.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in health technology or biomedical engineering across a multi-hospital system.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, Healthcare Technology, or related field.
  • In-depth knowledge and applied background in biomedical equipment management, clinical engineering techniques, server/network monitoring, and security. Knowledge of Clinical Engineering industry trends. Proven ability to apply theoretical concepts to define workflows to meet department standards and organization goals.
  • Knowledge of relevant biomedical equipment safety regulations and performance standards. Ability to apply policy knowledge to proactively identify potential risk areas in clinical engineering systems.
  • Advanced user of clinical engineering technology and systems. Knowledge of other devices, systems, and integrations in the industry and the ability to notice technological inefficiencies and analyze the pros and cons of adopting alternatives.
  • Skills in employee development to grow assigned manager and supervisor leadership skills, leading and guiding them to achieve objectives and manage conflicts. Strategic abilities to collaborate with senior management on setting objectives.
  • Proven ability to set goals and manage the implementation process for initiatives. Highly adaptable and able to work effectively under pressure, meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated skills to organize, simplify, and increase efficiency of clinical workflows, consolidate equipment management processes, and integrate systems while maintaining standards and compliance.
  • Interpersonal skills to maintain professional relationships with peers, senior management, all levels of clinical staff, assigned staff, and coordinate clinical engineering activities across functions. Ability to work collaboratively and promote others, soliciting and incorporating their ideas when appropriate.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to evaluate complex or new issues and identify options for resolution when no precedent exists. Demonstrated analytical skills to probe, challenge, and to question the status quo.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to address critical, sensitive situations with discretion. Strong abilities to actively listen and change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from, others.
  • Proven experience managing complex capital programs and large clinical device inventories.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of The Joint Commission, FDA, and CMS requirements related to medical equipment.
  • Strong understanding of medical device cybersecurity and integration with IT systems.
  • Exceptional communication, relationship management, and strategic planning skills.
  • Skilled in fostering positive labor-management relations and ensuring compliance with union contracts while promoting teamwork and operational efficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification as a Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM), Clinical Engineer (CCE), or related credential preferred.
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Business or Healthcare Administration preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of medical center, HR, and UC policies and processes.
