The Arctic and Interior Alaska Campaign Director will develop and implement strategic campaigns to protect and enhance Alaskas national parks while building a diverse effective and enduring network of national park advocates in Alaska. The Campaign Director will oversee campaign and programmatic activities across the 20 million acres of national parklands in Arctic and Interior Alaska to protect park resources from mining and other development impacts advocate for co-stewardship and co-management of parklands and wildlife in coordination with Alaska Native Tribes strengthen relationships with Alaska Native leaders to promote equitable environmental outcomes and engage in national policy efforts to provide adequate funding and resources to the national park system. Partners in these campaigns may include rural residents remote gateway communities and local governments tourism businesses and representatives wildlife advocates Alaska Native tribes and tribal members and current and former military personnel. The Campaign Director will work closely with the other members of thesmall Alaska team and cheerful cooperation and accountability to team members is a must.

Salary Range : $105k 113k commensurate with experience.

  • Develop and direct campaigns to protect and enhance national parks in Arctic and Interior Alaska while achieving organizational environmental equity objectives. Tactics may include state or federal legislative efforts litigation grassroots and grass-top activism and effective and powerful communications at a state and national level. Implement campaigns in ways that position NPCA to be a leader in large landscape conservation advocacy in the state and nationally. Understand and manage campaign and program budgets. Steward donors and foundation relationships in cooperation with Regional Director and Development staff specific to funding opportunities associated with active campaigns.

  • Work with NPCAs communications team to design and implement earned paid and social media and other advocacy tools providing materials for NPCA publications to further our park protection park funding policy leadership and ally development goals.

  • Build and support meaningful and authentic strategic relationships with Tribal and business leaders tourism and economic development professionals local state and federal elected officials public lands partners recreation enthusiasts and the National Park Service.

  • Provide strategic oversight in development of other large-landscape and wildlife campaigns at NPCA coordinating closely with Wildlife Program and Alaska leadership to effectivelysupport campaign staff at various stages of campaign development and implementation.

  • Participate in and facilitate national-level policy development including participating inworking groups and coalitions including but not limited to wildlife environmental justice co-management and hardrock mining.

  • Play a meaningful role in keeping a three-person office running smoothly. This includessupporting the Regional Director in developing a vision goals and strategic direction for theoffice as well as mentoring other regional staff. Assist with planning and implementingevents and meetings including Regional Council meetings fundraising events and with purchase of supplies vendor and IT issues and logistical planning.

    Minimum Work Schedule : 32-hour work week. Flexible hours scheduled between 8 : 30am 5 : 30pm Monday through Thursday. Occasional weekend work is required for certain activities.

    Travel : Regional travel required for meetings events and outreach (for instance visits to parks to meet staff and local stakeholders and visits to Juneau to educate lawmakers and agency personnel). National travel periodically required for national legislative lobbying and NPCA meetings and events in the DC area.

    Minimum Scope of Position : The Campaign Director will work with the Alaska team to build and implement strategic and successful campaigns to protect and fund national parks. The Campaign Director will be expected to take the lead on some campaigns in particular NPCAs efforts to protect Gates of the Arctic National Preserve and other Northwest Alaska national parklands from a mining road. The Campaign Director may co-lead NPCA efforts to convince Congress to appropriately fund parks and will also make significant contributions to NPCA campaigns where other colleagues are the lead. Campaigns will generally be designed to build a diverse and powerful set of advocates for national parks and the Campaign Director will be expected to play a significant role in the work to build advocates. The Campaign Director will work with Alaska staff and may take the lead in some cases on office comments events publications and other needs that arise.

    Minimum Qualifications Competencies Skills Education and Traits :

  • Significant success with strategic campaign management and project planning and implementation from developing long- and medium-term strategies to implementing short-term tactics.
  • Significant success in building strategic partnerships and managing coalitions
  • Significant success in building professional relationships working effectively on a team and with volunteers supporters allies and the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate multiple projects handle details work effectively under pressure with minimum to moderate supervision to manage and meet deadlines and to produce high quality work.
  • BS / BA preferred with at least six to seven years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of the Alaska state legislature and legislative process preferred as is experience with environmental laws particularly the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) and Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA).
  • Must be comfortable working collaboratively as part of a closely-knit team of professional colleagues.
  • Professional presentation and excellent written and oral communications skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in MS Word Excel PowerPoint and effectively using the internet is required.
