The City Manager's Office serves as the central leadership and coordinating office for the City of Durham, overseeing daily operations, implementing City Council priorities, and driving citywide strategy and performance. We are seeking a motivated Management Intern to support high-impact initiatives that influence how local government decisions are developed, executed, and translated into services that improve the lives of Durham residents. The intern will regularly collaborate with departments across the organization and gain exposure to how citywide initiatives are coordinated at the executive level.

Internship Design & Learning Experience : This internship is intentionally co-designed with the selected intern. At the start of the program, we will work together to identify the intern's interests, career goals, and skills they would like to develop. The intern's project assignments, learning objectives, and exposure to City operations will be shaped around those priorities while also supporting the needs of the City Manager's Office and partner departments. Past focus areas have included policy analysis, program evaluation, community engagement, data strategy, and government operations.

Duties / Responsibilities : Specific projects vary each summer and are shaped by City priorities and the intern's interests, skills, and professional development goals. The Management Intern will support the City Manager's Office and partner departments on high-priority, citywide projects. Depending on the intern's interests and office needs, responsibilities may include :

• Conducting policy, program, and operational research for senior leadership
• Performing qualitative and quantitative data analysis and summarizing findings
• Supporting evaluation, performance measurement, and process improvement efforts
• Assisting with cross-departmental projects related to a variety of topics such as infrastructure, community safety, housing, youth services, or operations
• Developing deliverables such as reports, memos, presentations, dashboards, or visual summaries
• Conducting interviews, focus groups, or stakeholder engagement activities
• Participating in executive meetings, site visits, and ride-alongs to learn how local government decisions are made and implemented
