Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit :

The Department of Computer Science is one of 16 science departments and curricula in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is a major research department with more than 35 tenured / tenure-track faculty, 11 teaching-track faculty, 12 research faculty, and 17 adjunct faculty, serving more than a thousand undergraduate students and hundreds of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Nearly 250 graduate students and nine EHRA non-faculty members assist with teaching and research activities. Additionally, 15 SHRA positions, including technical and administrative personnel, support the department’s infrastructure. Our guiding research principle is collaboration, as it has been since the department’s founding in 1964. We believe that computer science’s greatest impact lies in working with other scientists to solve problems in their respective disciplines. As such, we actively seek opportunities to initiate new research with colleagues across campus, including in the sciences, medicine, and the humanities. Many computer science faculty members hold adjunct or joint appointments in other departments, lead large interdisciplinary research groups, and collaborate with colleagues from other universities across the Research Triangle, the United States, and around the world.

Position Summary :

The Department of Computer Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for tenure-track Assistant Professor Positions to begin on or after July 1, 2026.

We seek scholars with expertise in (1) Algorithms and Complexity Theory and (2) Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. We also welcome applications from exceptional candidates in all areas of computer science, including but not limited to machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, graphics, augmented / virtual reality, medical imaging, robotics, visualization, real-time and embedded / cyber-physical systems, formal verification, mobile computing, security and computer systems, and related fields. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :

Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely related field. They should demonstrate strong potential for securing external research funding, delivering high-quality teaching, and effectively mentoring students.
