We are seeking an experienced DB Systems Programmer / Database Administrator to support and optimize DB on z / OS across development, test, and production environments. This role combines system-level DB support with application DBA responsibilities, including schema design, database utilities, performance tuning, backup / recovery, and change implementation. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise within the broader mainframe ecosystem , including z / OS, CICS, MQ, RACF, and storage environments.
Key Responsibilities
DB Systems Programming
- Install, maintain, configure, and support DB on z / OS .
- Manage subsystem resource availability and capacity.
- Perform subsystem tuning, performance analysis, and optimization .
- Execute and support backup and recovery for DB subsystem components.
- Provide DB subsystem status reporting and incident support as needed.
DB Application DBA
Provide ongoing support for application databases , including creation, configuration, and maintenance.Perform database object administration (tables, indexes, schemas, etc.)Utilize and tune DB utilities such as REORG, RUNSTATS, IMAGECOPY, LOAD, and UNLOAD.Collaborate with development teams on data modeling and database design .Define and maintain backup and recovery strategies .Develop plans for database changes in development and production environments.Implement and document approved database changes using change control standards.Broader Mainframe Environment (Context & Collaboration)
While the primary focus is DB, the environment includes and collaboration may involve :
z / OS installation, maintenance, systems customization, and IBM / BMC utilities.RACF , TCP / IP networking, FTP / SMTP, SMS / HSM, TLS, Infoprint.CICS region support, utilities troubleshooting, and performance issue resolution.MQ (Mainframe & Distributed) maintenance, configuration, queue management, and incident resolution.Mainframe Automation (IBM System Automation).Storage (DASD & VTS), allocation management, replication, reporting, and GDPS familiarity.Capacity & Workload Planning for mainframe resource utilization.z / VM / zLinux configuration and system support (nice to have).Qualifications
–+ years as a DB Systems Programmer and / or DB DBA in a z / OS mainframe environment.Strong understanding of DB internals, utilities, and system tuning .Hands-on experience with backup, recovery, and DR procedures .Practical experience with data modeling and database architecture .Familiarity with RACF , JCL , and standard enterprise change management processes.Strong problem-solving, performance analysis, and communication skills.Preferred Experience
