Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC) is a -bed freestanding psychiatric hospital located near the beautiful resort area of Virginia Beach, Virginia; a short -minute drive to the ocean front. VBPC offers acute psychiatric and substance abuse services for adults years and older. The hospital is accessible hours a day for admissions, and includes mental health assessments and an excellent referral network. Treatment programs and specialty services at VBPC include substance abuse, dual diagnosis and partial hospitalization. Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center currently has a 7a-7p Mental Health Specialist position open. Candidates must be available to work weekends and holidays.

Position Summary: Serves as an active member of the program staff; develops and maintains a therapeutic relationship with patients; assists in maintenance of a safe, clean therapeutic environment; and assures patient participation in program schedule. Performs technical/patient care duties, as appropriate. Interacts with patients, patient families, clinical team, and community resources establishing relationships and providing positive customer service. Acts as lead for the MHC’s and provides training/mentoring for new Counselors on the unit. Provides evidence-based care. Helps in overall unit organization and environment/patient safety. Ensures program décor is neat, clean, and attractive.

Qualifications

The following are the job requirements for the 7a-7p Mental Health Specialist position:

• Undergraduate degree in Psychology, Human Services, Sociology, Counseling or in a related behavioral science field.
• Associates degree in Psychology, Human Services, Sociology, Counseling or in a related behavioral science field; one year of direct care experience working with adult psychiatric or chemical dependency clients.
• RNA/LPN or High School/GED Diploma; three years of direct care experience working with adult psychiatric or chemical dependency clients.
