Veterinary Assistant

Veterinary Assistants in surgery at Kennesaw Pet Center play a crucial role in supporting veterinarians and technicians during procedures, from patient preparation to recovery. This position focuses on surgical and treatment areas, requiring attention to detail, strong animal handling skills, and the ability to work in a highly efficient clinical environment. Veterinary Assistants in surgery ensure pets receive safe, high-quality care while helping the surgical team work efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Preparation :

Admit surgical patients : Review records, perform diagnostics (blood work / radiographs)

  • Place catheters
  • Prepare medications, animals, and equipment for anesthesia
  • Surgical Support :

    • Safely restrain patients

  • Set up and monitoring equipment setup
  • Support the surgical team during procedures
  • Recovery Care :

    • Monitor patients post-surgery, providing safety and comfort

  • Communicate recovery progress to the veterinary team
  • Sanitation & Organization :

    • Clean, sterilize, and organize surgical instruments

  • Maintain treatment / surgical areas, and follow strict infection control protocols
  • Record controlled medications
  • Client Communication

    • Communicating with clients the day before, the morning of, during the procedure, at check out, and the day after the procedure

  • Preparing a detailed discharge report

    • Essential Personal Attributes

  • Compassion and patience with pets, especially those in recovery or under stress.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills to support the veterinary and technician staff.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow medical protocols precisely.
  • Strong proficiency in handling animals and assisting with medical procedures.
  • Prior experience in a veterinary setting or animal care preferred, but training provided. Ability to incorporate feedback.
