Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

• Responsibilities
• Develop and implement individualized therapeutic recreation plans that incorporate activities like music therapy, dance therapy, art therapy, yoga, swimming, and equine experiences to meet clients unique needs.
• Conduct comprehensive patient assessments to determine appropriate recreational interventions for individuals with conditions such as dementia, PTSD, autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, or behavioral health challenges. Individuals with SCI and TBI.
• Lead group and individual therapy sessions focusing on behavioral management, mental health counseling, crisis management, and case management strategies.
• Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of recreational activities within overall treatment plans while maintaining compliance with HIPAA regulations and medical documentation standards.
• Collect data on participant progress through meticulous record-keeping of medical records, intake forms, and ongoing assessments to evaluate program effectiveness.
• Facilitate specialized programs in settings such as assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospice care environments, or community centers that serve seniors or children with disabilities.
• Manage emergency situations effectively during activities involving physical exertion like dancing or swimming while ensuring safety protocols are followed at all times.
• Qualifications
• Certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) from an accredited organization.
• Proven experience working with diverse populations including seniors (geriatrics), children (pediatrics), individuals with autism or disabilities, or those receiving hospice or dementia care. Also, community based experience working with individuals with TBI and SCI.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology related to behavioral health conditions such as PTSD or Alzheimers disease; familiarity with medical records management is essential.
• Experience designing and leading activities involving music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, yoga, equine-assisted therapy or other creative modalities.
• Ability to perform patient assessments accurately and develop tailored treatment plans aligned with individual goals.
• Excellent communication skills for conducting individual / group counseling sessions and collaborating within multidisciplinary teams.
• Knowledge of HIPAA compliance standards for handling sensitive health information; experience in data collection and documentation is preferred.
• Physical ability to participate in active recreational activities including swimming or dancing; experience working in assisted living or hospice settings is advantageous.
