Position Summary
The Finance Director / Controller will report to Caliber's President within the Caliber Public Schools network office and will lead and oversee all finance and accounting functions for Caliber's central office, our two schools in Richmond, CA and Vallejo, CA, and 4 other schools operated by another charter management organizations that Caliber supports.
You will develop and implement financial plans, budgets, fiscal policies, and accounting procedures and systems that ensure the prudent and accurate financial administration of the organization. You will oversee a team of 3+ accounting and payroll professionals at Caliber and our partner organization who carry out day-to-day accounting activity (accounting supervisor, A / P, A / R, payroll, etc.). And you will be responsible for ensuring that budgets and financial reports are created and distributed to leadership teams, and external constituents (government agencies, funders, etc.) on an accurate and timely basis throughout the school fiscal year.
This will be an active member of Caliber's senior leadership team of C-level and Managing Director level leaders. It will have a seat at the table on major decisions that impact the organization and its mission. This is a CFO / CBO-track role, and the ideal candidate will have the ability and interest in elevating to C-level status within 2-3 years based on retirement succession plans the organization has identified.
Essential Job Functions :
The Finance Director / Controller will be responsible for :
- Preparing and monitoring annual budgets for Caliber and partner organization's schools and central offices :
- Maintaining timely and accurate revenue and expense forecasts across all divisions and funding sources.
- Preparing monthly reports for Board members and budget owners across Caliber and partner organizations to allow for proactive decision making about school finances.
- Leading periodic meetings with budget owners across Caliber and partner organizations.
- Preparing periodic budget updates required by the state and other funders (e.g., quarterly public grant expenditure reports, triennial State budget updates, quarterly banking and debtholder covenant reporting, and periodic financial reports required by private donors).
- Overall leadership of accounting policies and systems :
- Refining and ensuring adherence with the organization's fiscal policies, procedures, and internal controls over accounting transactions.
- Maintaining and recommending improvements to the organization's accounting systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, Bill.com, Divvy, etc.).
- Maintaining our Chart of Accounts consistent with CSAM and SACS structures used by California public schools.
- Leading the day-to-day accounting needs of the organization in the following areas :
- Overseeing and developing an accounting staff of 3+ across Caliber and our partner organization (Senior Accountant, A / P, A / R, etc.).
- Tracking revenues from public and private sources to ensure receipt of all funds due to the schools and that funds are used in a manner that is consistent with their allowable uses.
- Coordinating with HR personnel to ensure that payroll and benefits costs are accurately recorded.
- Maintaining asset and liability ledgers and depreciation schedules and preparing journal entries for all non-cash accruals or other inter-divisional or inter-fund allocations.
- Managing the monthly closing process, including reconciling all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
- Acting as a primary point of contact with banking and other financial institutions.
- Leading the year-end closing and audit processes alongside Caliber and partner organization auditors.
- Track and close out end of year revenue and expense accruals to match the appropriate fiscal period.
- Ensure the successful and timely completion of audit reports for the State and information returns to the IRS and FTB.
Qualifications
Required : Education :
Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in business administration, accounting, or a closely related field.Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is a plusExperience :
Minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting & / or financial analysis experience in the charter school sector, or some other non-profit with government accounting exposure.Experience working with enterprise accounting software systems required. Experience with tools Caliber uses is a plus (Sage Intacct & Bill.com in particular).Knowledge of generally acceptable accounting principles (GAPP) required. Knowledge of legal provisions governing California charter school and non-profit financial transactions is a plus.Skills :
