Found in 1974, United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII) is the only Urban Indian Organization in Los Angeles County, proudly serving as a home for American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Through our healthcare facility and culturally centered programs, we provide essential physical, behavioral, and spiritual health services—helping individuals stay connected to their Tribal heritage and traditions.


For over 50 years, UAII has grown to become the largest nonprofit provider of health and human services for American Indians and Alaska Natives in Los Angeles, home to the nation’s largest Urban Indian population. Our dedicated team delivers compassionate care that supports daily healing, resilience, and the continued strength of our communities.

Job Summary


United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII), is seeking an experienced and visionary Executive Director of Healthcare to lead its Healthcare Division. This position oversees medical, behavioral health, dental, and wellness programs, ensuring high-quality, culturally grounded, and compliant healthcare services for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities and the broader population we serve.


The Executive Director of Healthcare provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and regulatory compliance management while advancing UAII’s mission, Indigenous values, and commitment to community-driven care.


Essential Functions


Leadership & Strategic Direction

  • Provide executive leadership for all Healthcare Division programs, services, and staff.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans that strengthen clinical operations, expand services, and improve health outcomes for AI/AN communities.
  • Ensure alignment with UAII’s mission, Indigenous values, and organizational priorities.

Clinical & Operational Oversight

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of medical, behavioral health, dental, and wellness programs.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, county, and Tribal healthcare regulations.
  • Strengthen clinical workflows, quality assurance, and patient experience.
  • Lead initiatives related to electronic health record (EHR) optimization, including eClinicalWorks (eCW).

Regulatory Compliance & Funding

  • Ensure compliance with the Indian Health Service (IHS), the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA), HIPAA, CMS, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Oversee reporting, audits, and programmatic requirements for IHS and other funding partners.
  • Support grant development, contract management, and healthcare reimbursement strategies.

Partnerships & Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Tribal Nations, Urban Indian Organizations, county agencies, and healthcare partners.
  • Represent UAII in healthcare coalitions, policy discussions, and interagency collaborations.
  • Promote culturally informed, community-centered approaches to healthcare delivery.

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Supervise Clinic Manager, Nurse Manager, Behavioral Health leadership, and other key healthcare personnel.
  • Foster a supportive, culturally grounded, and accountable work environment.
  • Lead workforce development, recruitment, and retention strategies.
Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • Demonstrated experience working in an Urban Native or Tribal healthcare clinic, with a strong understanding of culturally grounded healthcare delivery.
  • Master’s degree in Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Social Work, Nursing, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare administration.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary clinical teams and complex healthcare operations.
  • Demonstrated experience with AAAHC and HRSA application process

Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)

  • Experience working in an Urban Indian Organization (UIO) or Tribal health program.
  • Familiarity with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) and Department of Public Health (DPH) systems.
  • Experience with EHR systems, particularly eClinicalWorks (eCW).
  • Knowledge of Indigenous governance, community engagement, and culturally informed care models.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Competencies

  • Knowledge of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA) and its application to healthcare programs.
  • Knowledge of Indian Health Service (IHS) systems, policies, and funding structures.
  • Strong understanding of compliance, quality assurance, and healthcare regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Working Conditions

This is a fully on-site position, and the successful applicant will be expected to work on-site daily.


Normal office conditions exist, and the noise level in the work environment can vary from low to moderate. Because of occupational exposure to aerosol transmissible diseases, employees are strongly encouraged to receive annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations to not only protect their health, but also the health of our colleagues and the community. In the absence of the recommended vaccinations, employees are advised to wear a mask at all times while on company premises as a precautionary measure to help prevent the spread of illnesses.


Potential occasional exposure to low dose radiation hazards, hazardous chemicals and body fluids and waste. Personal protective equipment provided. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. Work is performed in a health clinic setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Will work with blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training. This job routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, photocopiers, and fax machines.
