General Definition of Work

The environmental health & safety technician, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion responding to environmental safety and health concerns. Position also assists with routine environmental safety and health tasks to reduce the risk of infectious disease, indoor air quality issues, biohazard and chemical exposure. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Director of Environmental Health and Stewardship.

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Perform all work in accordance with established standards, methods, and practices
  • Complete tasks related to infectious disease control through chemical disinfection; scope may include minor building component removal including chemical waste
  • Handle materials that may contain infectious disease or blood borne pathogens
  • Perform limited bacterial growth remediation
  • Use various mechanical devices and manual tools associated with disinfection
  • Identify and report building health and safety deficiencies in facilities
  • Clean air vents periodically to reduce microbial growth
  • Support health inspection improvement process
  • Support water quality program through water sampling and flushing protocols
  • Conduct limited and minor environmental sampling
  • Support Summer Mobile Inspection Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Program
  • Periodically replace discharged / expired fire extinguishers of various chemical origins
  • Replace district Automated External Defibrillator (AED) expired battery components
  • Participate in training and attend meetings as required
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic North Carolina Department of Labor (OSHA) regulations
  • Knowledge of basic Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations
  • Knowledge of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Knowledge of electrostatic sprayers and disinfection techniques
  • Knowledge of workplace hazards, appropriate safety techniques, and proper lifting procedures
  • Knowledge of and physical ability to assist maintenance team with minor repairs related to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and general health concerns
  • Ability and willingness to pursue licenses and certifications as part of a professional development plan
  • Ability to read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) documents, operating & maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions
  • Ability to wear N95 or half-face respiratory protection
  • Ability to follow chemical usage instructions including mathematic skills related to dilution ratios of cleaning products
  • Ability to use a ladder, unload supplies and equipment, and move or arrange furniture & equipment to complete assigned chemical disinfection tasks
  • Ability to use or learn specialized tools, equipment, or software
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours such as second shift, nights, and weekends
  • Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment
  • Ability to reflect appropriate response to situations, while maintaining a professional and personal demeanor

    • Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree in occupational health, safety, industrial hygiene, fire protection, or related field or minimum three (3) years of related work experience required
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

    Special Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical which includes successfully completing a pulmonary function test
  • Requires flexibility to work hours when students and staff are not present
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
  • Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings

    • Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

  • Work occasionally requires moderate physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Work may require lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (25-50 lbs.)
  • Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions
  • Work may be in environments where microbial growth may be present
  • Work regularly requires the exchange of accurate and detailed information through oral and written communication
  • Ability to move to various work locations
  • Visual acuity requires determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through verbal communications
  • Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g., business office, light traffic)
  • Requires the ability to interact with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
  • Must be adaptable to performing under mild to high levels of stress
