The Prince Surgical Critical Care Unit is a 22 bed intensive care unit in the Meijer Heart Center at Butterworth Hospital. The surgical ICU specializes in the care of critically ill trauma and surgical patients. The trauma population includes geriatric rib fractures, traumatic brain injury, multi-trauma requiring critical care needs, and the critical care adult burn population. The surgical population includes trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, surgical oncology, and vascular surgery with critical care needs. Staff in the surgical ICU also provide care to medical and neuro critically ill patients.
Because this unit cares for complex trauma patients after surgery and helps with overflow of Heart and Lung (CTICU) and helps support the Neuro ICU team they share a floor with, the work is both challenging and fulfilling. We generally have 2 Nurse Techs working on this team at night. The surgical ICU specializes in the care of critically ill trauma and surgical patients. Our Nursing Technicians support nurses and other ancillary staff in providing competent care of patients requiring ventilator support, life-sustaining titratable medications including cardiac and sedation medications, and assist with bedside procedures including preparation of the sterile field for tracheostomies, central line placement, and burn dressing changes. The surgical ICU is a fast-paced unit that relies on teamwork and an interdisciplinary approach with not only provider teams, but ancillary staff in order to deliver excellent and effective care.
This is a direct patient care role, and duties will include taking vitals, checking blood sugar, wound care, bed bathing, toileting, ambulating, catheterization, and acting as safety attendant for patients as needed. Additionally, you could be involved in postmortem care.
Orientation requires multiple weekday training classes that are 8am-4:30pm. SICU Nurse Tech Orientation continues on for 8-11 weeks, working 3 shifts per week with a preceptor, mainly on day shift 7am-7:30pm. Class work and preceptor work 2-3 shifts per week.
