Job Title: Network Planning Engineer/Network Architect

Payrate: $49.50 to $66 per hour
Role Description: Our Transmission & Distribution global practice is looking for a Fiber Planning Engineer to work as part of the FirstEnergy Fiber Replacement Program (FRP) Team. This FRP team will help FirstEnergy manage a large-scale, multi-year portfolio of fiber rebuild projects, affecting topology of MPLS, SONET, and DWDM networks. In this role, the candidate will guide internal network architecture, fiber planning/routing, and fiber execution efforts.
Responsibilities include: - Assess existing and future transport solutions utilizing design tools such as GIS. Transport solutions will be determined based upon location type, substation size, remote access requirements, etc.
- Attend weekly client fiber project review sessions, participate in quarterly network planning, and implement coordination meetings.
- Coordinate with GIS team on documentation of logical schematic and geographic network designs for systems including, but not limited to MPLS, DWDM, and SONET.
- Work with network design engineering on integrating fiber designs into network design packages. Provide guidance to design team on transport solutions and network topology.
- Coordinate FRP buildout plans with the FirstEnergy Portfolio Development lead to develop schedule and budgets.
- Assist in the creation and submission of Fiber Optic Work Requests (FOWR), the review of fiber cost estimates, and quality review of fiber design packages. Review fiber scope & estimation proposals to ensure technical and constructability criteria are met.
- Assist in the documentation of fiber initiatives and processes, including process documentation updates and deliverables to the client, “How To”guides, etc.
- Participate in site visits to assess existing substation control house conditions and confirm new equipment needs. Additional investigation of distribution lines along fiber route may be required.
What skills would the selected applicant obtain? - Knowledge and experience of utility funding mechanisms and lifecycle of projects.
- Hands-on experience working in client systems including geographic information systems (NTV GIS, TAMI, GISView) and portfolio management system (OPPM).
- Direct client interaction with client network team counterparts, fiber project managers, portfolio team, project development project managers, and execution project managers.
- Site visit opportunities at client facilities providing real world in-person experience at substations and communication shelters.
