Building Automation Project EngineerPosition summary

We’re hiring a detail-oriented Building Automation Project Engineer to convert sales estimates, contract drawings, and specifications into complete submittal packages and constructible designs. You’ll develop control sequences, single-line diagrams, instrument and I / O schedules, bills of material, and valve / damper selections according to company standards and industry best practices. You’ll support project intake and turnover with Sales and coordinate design progress and handoffs with Project Management — delivering accurate as-built documentation at closeout and staying current on controls technology and trends.

Key responsibilities

  • Produce full submittal packages from sales estimates, contract drawings and specifications, including control narratives, diagrams, and device selections.
  • Ensure designs comply with contract requirements, project specs, applicable codes, and company standards.
  • Participate in project intake / turnover meetings with Sales to verify scope and clarifications.
  • Lead or facilitate design progress meetings and turnovers with Project Management, commissioning, procurement, and field teams.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers / contractors to integrate BAS into the overall building systems.
  • Generate clear deliverables for procurement, installation, commissioning, and as-built documentation.
  • Support commissioning activities by providing sequences, point lists, and functional test procedures.
  • Maintain and update standard templates, sequences library, and selection guidelines.
  • Keep current on BAS hardware / software trends and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Provide technical support to sales, project managers, service, and field teams.
  • Identify scope gaps, risks, and potential change-order opportunities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for the engineering and submittal workflows.

Qualifications (bold required) :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical / Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or equivalent technical degree, or 4+ years relevant BAS experience.
  • 3–7 years experience developing building automation / control submittals and shop drawings.
  • Experience with sequences of operation, point lists / I / O, and BOM creation.
  • Knowledge of HVAC equipment controls and field devices (VAV, AHU, chiller, etc.).
  • Proficiency with Vision and AutoCAD to produce or review control drawings.
  • Experience with BAS platforms / protocols (Tridium Niagara, BACnet, Modbus, etc.).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; familiarity with project management tools preferred.
  • Qualifications — preferred

  • NICET or other HVAC / control certifications; commissioning credentials a plus.
  • Manufacturer product training or certification (Tridium, Honeywell, etc.).
  • Knowledge of HVAC piping and hydronic calculations for valve sizing.
  • Understanding of BAS networking and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Experience in a contractor or systems integrator environment.
  • Skills and competencies

  • Interpersonal : Collaborative, able to lead cross-functional meetings.
  • Project : Time management, prioritization, documenting design decisions.
  • Analytical : Troubleshoot sequence issues and reconcile field conditions.
  • Continuous learning : Keeps up with BAS hardware / software and standards.
  • Typical outcomes / success metrics

  • Submittal packages completed on schedule and allotted time with minimal internal RFIs.
  • Reduced design-related change orders by identifying scope gaps early.
  • Timely turnover packages delivered to PMs and commissioning teams.
