Surgical Support Technician

Surgery - (Full-time, Day Shift) -

The Surgical Support Technician is responsible for the care and safety of the patients who come under his or her care. Included within this assignment is the responsibility for ensuring effective communication between him- or herself, the charge nurse, the patient, other staff, physicians, and other hospital departments. Performs other duties as needed.

High School Diploma or GED required. Graduate of an accredited Operating Room Technician (ORT) program or equivalent experience and skill to meet competency requirements of the position. Minimum one year recent experience in the operating room required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association required. Operating Room Technician (ORT) certification preferred.

Demonstration of infection control principles and aseptic techniques. Demonstrates an understanding of the normal growth and development of the pediatric, adolescent, adult populations and normal aging process of the elderly. Ability to work cooperatively with the surgical team. Demonstrates competency in the practice of advanced level case assignment and advanced level equipment. Demonstrates knowledge of autoclaves and sterilization modes. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. Demonstrates knowledge of the use of equipment, instruments and supplies. Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures and terminology. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place and patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
