Controller Position
We are looking for an experienced Controller to lead and manage all financial operations within our organization, based in San Francisco, California. Responsibilities include delivering timely, accurate, and GAAP-compliant financial reporting across all entities. Lead monthly / annual close, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements. Conduct variance analysis, financial modeling, and scenario planning to support strategic decisions. Manage multi-entity consolidations, intercompany allocations, and reconciliations. Oversee the full accounting cycle across multiple business units. Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements. Manage property and real estate development accounting, including capital projects and depreciation. Monitor and reconcile intercompany transactions. Lead annual audits and oversee timely tax filings (e.g., IRS Form 990). Serve as primary liaison with external auditors and tax advisors. Manage grant and fund accounting, ensuring accurate tracking of restricted funds and compliance with requirements. Develop and update internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard operations. Drive automation and process improvements to enhance efficiency. Optimize ERP and financial systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, Vena) for reporting and consolidations. Lead organizational and program budgets in partnership with department leaders. Monitor expenditures for compliance with budgets, funder requirements, and grant terms. Provide training and tools to strengthen financial literacy among budget holders. Partner with Programs, Operations, People, and Development teams to align financials with strategy. Deliver financial analysis and forecasting to guide resource allocation and long-term planning. Build and lead a high-performing accounting team focused on accountability and growth. Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching and professional development. Lead organizational training to enhance financial literacy and compliance. Implement project management tools and reporting frameworks to improve accountability.
Requirements include a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA / CMA preferred, MBA or Master's a plus. Ten or more years of progressive nonprofit or public accounting experience, including managing and developing accounting teams. Expertise in multi-entity consolidations, intercompany transactions, GAAP compliance, and financial audits. Skilled in ERP systems (e.g., Sage Intacct, Vena), property and real estate development accounting, and payroll / HCM systems. Strong analytical, communication, and organizational abilities with a track record of leading cross-functional teams and complex projects. Strategic thinker with a systems-oriented approach, demonstrating integrity, fiscal responsibility, and commitment to mission-driven work.
