About This Position
This position will be working with 4 classes of 6th grade English and 1 class of EL students utilizing EL teaching strategies.

About Our School
Jarrett Middle School serves students in grades 6, 7, and 8, and households in Palolo Valley, Kaimuki town, and St. Louis Heights. Within our district is a low-income public housing development called Palolo Valley Homes, a small section of the University of Hawai'i faculty housing, and single-family homes that blanket the Palolo community. Jarrett’s feeder schools are Ali'iolani, Hokulani, and Palolo elementary schools. From Jarrett, most students go on to Kaimuki High School.

Our mission is “William Paul Jarrett Middle School, in partnership with our families and community, strives for the highest by being caring, responsible lifelong learners who make a difference.”

Jarrett Middle School functions using the Honolulu District’s middle school model. The middle school program at Jarrett has the following components:

* Students are exposed to a variety of experiences through exploratory courses.

* Teachers are organized into grade level and department teams.

* There are a variety of enrichment activities.

* The curriculum focuses on standards-based content, critical thinking skills, integration of content areas, cooperative learning, and hands-on learning.

* An advisory period is offered in homerooms for character education, team building, and career education. The homeroom teacher acts as the adult mentor for each child in the homeroom classroom.

Jarrett is a small school with homerooms and small class sizes. Students are provided with a variety of experiences to meet their needs as early adolescents. The middle school philosophy is evidenced by nurturing teachers and staff, grade level teams, adult mentors, outreach and school counselors at each grade level, exploratory wheel classes, intramural activities, talent shows, band concerts, parent/student orientation meetings, annual parent/teacher conferences, need-based conferences, transition meetings with Complex schools, field trips, a school wide banquet, academic and developmental classes, and student support team meetings.

In SY 2008-2009, Jarrett implemented Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), a program that equips students with skills and organizational tools to be successful in their learning and promotes a college going culture. An elective class in grades 6, 7, and 8 serves as the focus for research-based best practices that are used schoolwide.

Jarrett Middle School wrestles with poor perceptions and stereotypes due to the school environment from the 1960s through the early 1990s, as well as its location near a low-income housing development. Many parents and community members remember how Jarrett used to be and are challenged with personal biases toward families living in low socioeconomic situations. Things are different than the perceptions and stereotypes that people have.

JMS strives on a daily basis to provide a safe, nurturing and challenging learning environment for all of its students. It is routine to walk around the school during instructional time and observing the students focused on their learning. It is common to see students playing tag, hacky sack, volleyball, soccer, or playing ukulele during recess.

Students also get their daily information from our closed-circuit “JTV” video production, which always ends with a student song of the day (acapella style). And regardless of whether the song is sung well or not, the showcased students do not get teased about it. Students take care of each other at Jarrett Middle School, and the sense that you get when you walk on campus is that you are on a middle school campus with an elementary school type of environment.

The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. With the exception of designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions, the minimum qualification to apply for a teacher, librarian or counselor position is a Bachelor's Degree.

If you are hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Within each year of employment, you must satisfactorily demonstrate active pursuit towards meeting Hawaii licensing requirements, as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB). It is your responsibility to ensure the program you have enrolled is aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.

Upon hire you will need to have a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit. You may apply for your Hawaii teaching license on the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board Website (https://hawaiiteacherstandardsboard.org/).

Please visit www.teachinhawaii.org to review the eligibility requirements for all bonuses, differentials, and initial salary placement.
