Position Summary:

SDOP is seeking a full-time Youth Organizer to help grow values-rooted, grassroots youth leadership in local schools and congregations. Organizers build relationships, identify and develop new leaders within institutions, and support them in taking collective action for justice. The ideal candidate is passionate about community, grounded in a sense of moral purpose, experienced in organizing, and able to work across diverse racial, ethnic, and faith backgrounds. This role centers on developing others, supporting local campaigns, and contributing to a team committed to building a more just and equitable San Diego. What You'll Be Doing:

  • Setting up and conducting 5-10 one-to-one meetings each week with new or established SDOP leaders, clergy, and influential external leaders.
  • Developing and supporting organizing teams (OTs) in local high schools, colleges, universities, and faith institutions.
  • Working with organizing teams to conduct listening sessions, research meetings, public actions and budget advocacy.
  • Develop and implement organizing and advocacy trainings and workshops.
  • Represent the organization in youth organizing-related coalitions and campaigns.
  • Building and maintaining intentional, public relationships with partner and allied organizations, coalitions, and public officials.
  • Playing a supportive role in both local and regional political strategizing.
  • Participating in local and regional trainings and staff development; developing leaders by leading local trainings.
  • Leading youth voter engagement efforts in every major election, focusing on volunteer engagement.

Who You Are: While no one person will embody all of the qualities described below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:

  • Connects with and believes in SDOP's mission.
  • Prior experience in training, teaching or presentation
  • Minimum 2+ years professional or volunteer experience in community organizing or related social change field
  • Ability to work with diverse religious, racial and geographic communities
  • Self-motivated, self-disciplined and flexible; able to work independently and on a team
  • Group facilitation skills; experience nurturing, managing, and guiding a team of people
  • Facility working with community leader, clergy and people of faith, in traditional and non-traditional spaces
  • Cultural competence and emotional intelligence to support and nurture a culture of belonging in multi-racial and multi-faith spaces
  • Strong interpersonal and relational skills
  • Able to prioritize work and manage time effectively
  • Work non-traditional hours, including evenings and some weekends.
  • CA driver's license and access to a reliable automobile (with at minimum liability insurance)
  • Fluency in Spanish or other language relevant to our organizing

Compensation and Benefits:

  • This is a full-time, hourly position.
  • The job includes regular evening work and some weekend work. The role requires frequent travel within San Diego County to meet with grassroots leaders, as well as weekly staff meetings at our San Diego offices.
  • Salary is competitive for the region and based on experience and demonstrated capacities, in a range from $27.00 - $29.00 per hour.
  • The benefits package includes Employer-paid medical, dental, and life insurance, 401 (k) with 5% employer contribution after 1 year, paid holidays, paid time off (vacation time, sick time, and personal days).
