Description

Under the supervision of a licensed Orthodontist, the post-doctoral fellow will provide pediatric dental care to evaluate tooth and jaw development and growth for craniofacial and cleft patients at Seattle Children's Dental Clinic. Provides special care orthodontics in collaboration with the speech pathologists, oral surgeons, and craniofacial plastic surgeons. Primarily treats conditions, defects, injuries and esthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws, and face for children and adolescents with craniofacial anomalies. Actively assists to provide clinical training and education to residents in Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, and Plastic Surgery.

B. Introduction

  • History : The fellowship training program will be a one-year post-orthodontic residency program that is designed to provide advanced knowledge and skills for the management of patients with craniofacial anomalies and those requiring special care.
  • Duration : 12 months
  • Prerequisite Training / Selection Criteria : Applicants have completed a verified postgraduate residency training program in Orthodontics. Applicants must be eligible for limited licensure in the State of Washington and supply documentation of passing scores on parts I and II of the NBDE.
  • Goals and Objectives of Training : Graduates of the program will be exposed to diagnosing, treatment planning, and care of orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic services to a large clinical volume of both pediatric and adult patients who have congenital and acquired craniofacial abnormalities. The goal of the program is to train the fellow to attain a level of competency that enables them to recognize, diagnosis and treat patients with craniofacial anomalies and special needs in a hospital-based team care setting.
  • Program Certifications : No additional certifications.

C. Resources

  • Teaching Staff : Clinical activities will include post-graduate level participation in the full spectrum of orthodontic cases and outpatient visits that are currently managed by our orthodontic attendings, Doctors Greenlee, Sheller, and Yi. This will be based at Seattle Children's Hospital. As a fellow, you may not engage in the outside practice of dentistry. All sites of practice, including any of which you engage in volunteer activities, must be approved by the fellowship director. The fellow will also be exposed to the experiences of the interdisciplinary team of the Craniofacial Center.
  • Facilities : The program is based at the Craniofacial Center at Seattle Children's Hospital, the pediatric tertiary care center for the Northwest region.
  • D. Educational Program – Basic Curriculum

  • Procedural requirements : Individuals in the program must have well-developed orthodontic skills and be familiar with the full range of orthodontic treatment modalities. The fellow will be exposed to infant orthopedics, including nasoalveolar molding and orthodontic airway plates.
  • Clinical components : Clinical activity is on a supervised basis only; there is no independent patient responsibility.
  • Didactic components : The fellowship covers the full range of congenital deformities from craniosynostosis, cleft lip and palate, rare deformities, facial tumors and orthognathic conditions. We work closely with providers in the Craniofacial Center, including, but not limited to craniofacial surgeons, oral and maxillofacial surgeons and craniofacial pediatricians. The fellow will have the opportunity to interact closely with each of these disciplines.
  • Research : Basic research is available. Clinical research, specifically active participation in ongoing clinical outcome studies and case series analysis, is expected. Presentation of original clinical research at a national meeting is supported and expected.
  • E. Evaluation : Fellows are evaluated on their performance periodically by the faculty. Quarterly meetings are scheduled with the program director and the fellow’s performance is discussed. The fellow is provided with appropriate feedback from the program director.

    Compensation :  $84,000-90,000 per year

    Required Education and Experience

    Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or DMD Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). Advanced training in an Orthodontics program accredited by the American Dental Association Commission. Advanced Dental Education in Orthodontics. Medical Staff membership and appropriate clinical privileges at Seattle Children’s and other sites as applicable.

    Required Credentials

    Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). Prior to start of employment, must obtain, and maintain in good standing, medical or allied health professional staff privileges that are not limited, revoked, suspended, conditioned, or probationary, except for normal probationary periods due to initial appointment. All medical and allied health professional staff members are provisional for the first year. Any and all medical or allied health professional staff privileges at Children's will terminate automatically upon the termination of the individual's employment at Children's. Termination of employment does not prohibit the individual from seeking medical or allied health professional staff privileges at Children’s as a non-employee in any category for which the individual qualifies. Questions regarding medical or allied health professional staff privileges may be directed to Medical Staff Services.

    Preferred

    Previous experience working with children and adolescents with medically compromised and developmentally delayed pediatric patients and patients with craniofacial anomalies.

    Salary Information

    This compensation range was calculated based on full-time employment (2080 hours worked per calendar year). Offers are determined by multiple factors including equity, skills, experience, and expertise, and may vary within the range provided.
