JOB SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Manager, effectively delivers instruction for aquatic programs, classes, fitness activities, or seminars. Responsibilities include planning, executing, and delivering program content, as well as maintaining communication with participants and their parents or guardians. The Program Instructor is also responsible for relaying pertinent information to the Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Manager.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Examples of Essential Job Functions

  • Ensure the safety of all course participants through alertness and firm, yet courteous enforcement of facility rules while instructing.
  • Monitor assigned programs for safe and efficient operation; interact with program participants and seek feedback.
  • Instruct appropriate skills across progression levels for participants of all ages.
  • Handle public or participant concerns, problems, or suggestions calmly and professionally.
  • Assist the Recreation Coordinator in recommending program equipment purchases related to class or program instruction.
  • Provide modifications or instructional adjustments for participants as needed.
  • Complete assigned duties and perform other duties as apparent or assigned.
  • Maintain regular, on-time attendance, which is essential for this position.

  • Teach skills and skill components correctly and in a manner easily understood by participants.
  • Attend all required staff training sessions and meetings.
  • EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS AND QUALIFICATIONS

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to think logically and follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions using several abstract or concrete variables.
  • Ability to follow instructions and directives accurately.
  • Knowledge of the facility and the safety procedures used.
  • Ability to work effectively with participants of all ages.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and the public : ability to tactfully handle a wide array of social situations.
  • Ability to perform all job duties safely and in accordance with applicable rules, guidelines, policies, and training.
  • Education, Training, and Experience

    Education RequiredHigh School diploma or equivalent (GED / HiSET).

    Experience RequiredPrior experience working at an aquatic facility or in a similar environment.

    Prior experience working with children and adults recommended.

    Experience PreferredCurrent program or class-related certification recommended.

    Qualifications Must be age 18 or older.

    PHYSICAL AND ENVIROMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS

    Required Physical Activities

    Sitting, standing, kneeling, reaching, climbing, walking, finger dexterity, talking, watching, hearing, repetitive motions, periods of elevated heart rate, and exercise.

    Physical Characteristics of the Job

    Moderate Physical Demand : Work that involves lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis.

    Environmental Characteristics

    Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and includes seasonal exposure to heat and cold. The position may involve exposure to unpleasant social situations, significant work pace pressures, and occasionally irregular evening or early morning work hours.

    Class-specific training or teaching aids; thermometers; general office equipment; SDS documentation; personnel policies; calculator; telephone; radio; PA system; rescue tubes; backboards; kickboards; floatation aids; boards; class record sheets; and lockers.
