Under the supervision of the Foreman, the employee operates one or more pieces of heavy equipment in the performance of moderately complex construction and maintenance activities. Employee receives specific instructions from supervisor. Work is performed under established procedures with frequent inspections during progress with final inspection of completed work. Employee performs maintenance inspections on assigned equipment, notifies foreman of equipment failures, and keeps records of work performed. Employee also performs other routine manual labor as assigned.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment Operation. Operates heavy equipment using proper safety gear in order to perform various road and right-of-way (ROW) construction and maintenance operations in a safe and proper manner.

1. Receives daily tasks and assignments from supervisor.
2. Performs road construction and maintenance activities.
3. Operates heavy tractors such as bulldozer, backhoe, track hoe, and front-end loader for excavating terrain and loading materials into trucks.
4. Operates grade-all, asphalt spreader and rollers to pave/resurface roads.
5. Operates motor graders to scrape and grade roads and shoulders.
6. Operates bush hog, slope mower, hydroblaster, and tractors with various attachments in performing ROW maintenance.
7. Installs and maintains drain pipes; cleans ditches.
8. Cuts back weeds and bushes on ROW.
9. Completes assignments within specified time frames.
10. Follows plans and instructions regarding projects.
11. Maintains a log of daily activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment Maintenance. Performs routine and preventative maintenance on assigned vehicle.

1. Performs daily and monthly safety and maintenance vehicle inspections on assigned equipment.
2. Performs preventative maintenance on equipment.
3. Monitors gauges and other indicators during equipment operation for non-standard conditions.
4. Ensures assigned equipment is fueled.
5. Reports equipment maintenance status to the Foreman.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Manual Labor. Performs manual labor tasks following departmental policies and procedures in order to ensure proper maintenance and efficient operations of the department.

1. Installs highway signs and traffic signals.
2. Digs and drills holes, cuts vegetation, fastens bolts, etc. using a variety of hand tools.
3. Assists in bridge repairs and construction.
4. Ensures the proper signage is visible during construction and maintenance operations.
5. Uses a chain saw to cut trees and bushes from ROW.
6. Performs flagman duties, as needed, while on road maintenance jobs.
7. Shovels asphalt, rocks, dirt and other materials during road repairs.
8. Picks up and piles brush, refuse and other materials.
9. Patches holes in roads.
10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

1. Two years of experience operating equipment in road maintenance and construction; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills and abilities commensurate with the requirements of this job.
2. Possess a current and valid driver's license.
3. Ability to travel throughout the County.
4. Ability to work overtime, weekends, or emergencies as needed.

Supplemental information

Physical Demands

The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
Work Environment

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g. working at great heights under extreme weather conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
