The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (“MSO”) is seeking a qualified professional to work as Correction Officers in Food Services at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction in Billerica, MA. The work hours for this position is a flex schedule between the hours of 9 : 30AM to 9 : 30PM.  The days off for the position will be Tuesday / Wednesday.  The hours and days off are subject to change and at the discretion of Management.  This is a full-time, non-exempt position covered under a collective bargaining agreement (NEPBA, Local 500).  The selected candidate must have the ability to attend a thirteen-week MSO Correction Officer / Basic Training Academy at the discretion of MSO management.

Under direct supervision of Senior Correction Officer in Food Services or other employees of higher grade, the responsibilities of the Correction Officer in Food Services include, but are not limited to, the following :

• Preparing meals and assuring controlled distribution under the supervising Chef;
• Enforcing health and safety regulations;
• Maintaining security of work area;
• Keeping inventory and maintaining security of all kitchen tools;
• Supervision of inmates assigned to Food Services;
• Preparing reports on any disturbances, security breaches;
• Maintaining custodial care and control of inmates and detainees;
• When necessary, patrols facility; makes rounds and takes head counts; observes conduct and behavior of inmates and detainees, noting significant behavioral patterns; prevents disturbances; notes and investigates suspicious inmate / detainee behavior, including the possibility of contraband, by searching individuals, vehicles, mail, packages, and inmate / detainee quarters; develops working relationships with inmates and detainees by referring individuals to appropriate supportive services, as needed, to aid in rehabilitation; prepares reports relative to fires, disturbances, accidents, security breaches, and monthly evaluations on inmates and detainees; accounts for inmate and detainee whereabouts at all times;  maintain cleanliness and safety of work area; controls inmate and detainee movement and activities throughout the facility; ensures accurate count in respective housing units and allows only authorized contents in cells; ensures that mail, sheets, towels, clothing, etc., is distributed according to department policy and procedure; enforces regulations pertaining to meals, recreation, shakedowns, showers, visits, key control, security rounds, cell checks, and inmate movement; assists in the supervision and training of new officers.  Required to work mandatory overtime based on operational needs in Food Services and must have the flexibility to work on multiple shifts;
• Assisting in training of new Officers;
• Performing and / or assist in other duties as required by MSO management.

Working Conditions :   This position requires : working in a correctional facility on a 24 / 7 basis, weekends, nights, holidays and are subject to being forced to work over 8 hours depending on operational needs; may encounter verbal and physical abuse from arrestees, detainees, and inmates; may be required to interact with people who are under physical and / or emotional stress; stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; may be required to lift and carry heavy objects up to 100 lbs.; may be required to physically restrain arrestees, detainees, and inmates in accordance with policy; may work under exposure to adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications :

The individual selected for the position of Correction Officer / Food Services shall be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency and must comply with all institutional rules regarding safety and security.

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.  Must be a Massachusetts resident, have an active valid driver’s license and the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts and pass a criminal background check.

Salary :   Starting salary range is $66,822.49 to $69,942.49 plus additional incentives, bonuses and employment benefits provided through a collective bargaining agreement. Interested candidates can review this job posting and apply for the position at www.middlesexsheriff.org.
