Job Summary

The Assistant Manager provides guidance, direction and leadership to Sterile Processing staff to deliver quality service to departments in providing patient care equipment and surgical instrumentation reprocessing functions including collection, decontamination, assembly, sterilization, high-level disinfection and distribution. Ensuring quality, productivity, and labor efficiency; and assisting department manager in accomplishing strategic and operational objectives. Serves as subject matter expert and resource for product reprocessing and ensures compliance with departmental budget. Models' excellence in customer service, ensuring the highest standards for both internal and external constituent satisfaction.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and / or certification if required of the position

A Base Certification from either CRCST from Healthcare Sterile Processing (HSPA) or from CSPDT from The Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)

  • At least (5) five years demonstrated experience working as a sterile processing technician in a Sterile Processing Department.
  • Minimum (2) year experience as a Sterile processing Manager / Supervisor
  • Demonstrated experience practicing and implementing operational practices according to AAMI Standards and Guidelines.
  • Extensive understanding and ability to maintain current knowledge of regulatory requirements and professional agencies, including but not limited to CMS, TJC, AORN, and APIC to ensure compliance.
  • Experience with disinfection, sterilization, packaging, and infection control practices and principles.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing or adherence to departmental staffing, revenue / or expense budgets.
  • Extensive knowledge of AAMI (American Association of Medical Instrumentation) recommended practices and regulatory agency guidelines as it pertains to sterile processing.
  • Experience and a knowledge base of a surgical atmosphere.
  • High attention to detail, quality, and thoroughness to complete work in timely and accurate manner.
  • Independent critical thinking skills and initiative to recognize, identify and solve problems understanding potential impact to others, patients, and internal and external customers.
  • Experience using Central Processing programs and computers including instrument tracking program, email, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
  • Ability to apply policy and procedure when making decisions.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and report problems accurately and timely.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment to recognize situations that need to be escalated and notify supervisor or other management of unusual or unexpected situations.
  • Ability to assist in planning and organizing workflow well; meet established turn-around-times, and deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize work to meet established turnaround times and administrative deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions to problems and tackle issues in a self-motivated manner in line with the direction of the project team and the organization.

  • Department Overview

    Sterile Processing is a department within Perioperative Services that supports 40 plus operating rooms by cleaning, disinfecting and sterilizing surgical instrumentation, flexible scope and case cart assembly. The Sterile Processing unit also supports Patient Care Services. Ambulatory Services and the Primary Care Network : within the health system by cleaning, disinfecting reusable equipment and the cleaning, disinfecting and sterilization of surgical instrumentation used by these services. Sterile Processing cleans and restocks all emergency crash carts; PAPR supply cart, airway boxes and ICU transport bags. The Sterile Processing Unit manages fiscal, material, and human resources to support the planning and coordination of surgical care and other patient care in the hospital and clinics.

Hear and speak well enough to communicate with others directly and over the phone. Must be able to work with adaptability, flexibility & maintain composure during stressful and / or adverse conditions. May be assigned to work at any Periop Sterile Processing to meet operational needs. May need to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs.
